    Newbie needs help please - InDesign Server crashing

    gerdalt

      Hi there, be patient please, I am new at this.

      I have downloaded the free trial CS5.5 InDesign Server code.

      I have installed it on a PC running Win Server 2008 (32 bit)

      I have installed the ExtendScript Toolkit

      I have entered the simple Hello World program from the CS5 Server Scripting Guide Manual (see below)

      When I run the helloworld.jsx file,  InDesign Server always crashes.

      The PC is quite old but has 2GB memory.

      The crash details are as follows:

      Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

        Application Name: InDesignServer.exe

        Application Version: 7.5.1.304

        Application Timestamp: 4de85730

        Fault Module Name: DOCUMENT FRAMEWORK.RPLN

        Fault Module Version: 7.5.0.142

        Fault Module Timestamp: 4d78c8d5

        Exception Code: c0000005

        Exception Offset: 00058bb1

        OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.272.7

        Locale ID: 2057

        Additional Information 1: b68b

        Additional Information 2: 3253411fd8270f5f3a953dd3615c74a5

        Additional Information 3: f6b4

        Additional Information 4: c51b6b93e8f6b2f26f2b5aa39f99a829

      Any advice appreciated.

      Ger

      The simple ExtendScript program is:

      var myDocument = app.documents.add();

      var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(0);

      var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();

      myTextFrame.geometricBounds = ["6p0", "6p0", "18p0", "18p0"];

      myTextFrame.contents = "Hello World";

      myDocument.save(new File("c:/Absolute.indd"));

      app.documents.item(0) .close();

          Hmm.

          I have installed it on a PC running Win Server 2008 (32 bit)

          Does Win Server 2008 have Dr. Watson? Specifically, do you have a %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\DRWTSN32.LOG file?

          Do you have the InDesign Desktop (regular) version installed on your system? Does it fail in the same way?

            Thank you for the quick response.

            Win Server 2008 does not have Dr Watson - I understand it cannot be installed there.

            No, I don't have InDesign desktop installed - just the Server.

              I would suggest you try installing InDesign Desktop (trial) and see if you can replicate the problem. It doesn't sound normal.

                I was afraid you'd suggest that!!

                It's taken me two weeks to get to where I am now, so I gues a few more days shouldn't matter

                As they say - "I'll be back".

                  OK, back again.

                  I downloaded InDesign CS5.5 trial and the script runs fine there.  It saves the .indd file.

                  I then removed line 6 (the SAVE) from the script above.

                  With that line removed the script runs error free on the Server. Don't know if it does anything!!

                  So I then focus on the syntax for the SAVE  It seems non standard?

                  Using workstation InDesign it seems to accept any of the following

                  "filename.indd"

                  "/c/filename.indd"

                  "D:\filename.indd"

                  The manual shows syntax "/c/filename.indd" but the /c/ part looks strange.

                  Any advice on another way to save the output file?

                    Sorry for the delay.

                    I'm not quite sure what the question is.

                    There are a bunch of different syntaxes, mostly because file paths in the Javascript API are handled accoridng to unix rules, most of the time, where a forward slash is the normal delimiter. The JavaScript Tools Guide discusses this, and it sounds like you have found it.

                    Just be conscious that in Javascript, if you type "D:\filename.indd", then the "\f" will be interpretted as an "f", because backslash is the JavaScript escape character. Thus, you should use either "D:\\filename.indd" or you should use one of the forward-slashed forms.

                    I would stick with "/c/filename.indd" if I were you, though you should try to avoid specifying the full path explicitly in your script, anyhow. "~/Desktop/filename.indd" would be much better.

                      Thank you for those comments.

                      But my original problem remains - when I run the original script, InDesign Server CS5.5 crashes.

                      If I remove line 6 it doesn't crash - but of course no .indd file is created.

                      I had hoped perhaps there was another way to output a file using a different syntax?

                        Sorry, I thought you had meant that changing the style of path specification solved your problem.

                        Are quite certain that you have permission to write to C:\?

                        Maybe the problem is one of file permissions, and you should ensure that you pass in a path that you know you can write to. Such as ~/Desktop/file.indd.

                          Hi there,

                          I have tried several different ways of specifying the output file path, but IS always crashes.

                          I need to spend more time learning ExtendScript so as to restructure the sample script provided.

                          Being a complete novice, I won't waste any more forum time until I am better skilled!!

                          Thanks again for your patience.
