Thanks for the suggestion and link, Eugene. I've replaced the preferences but the problem remains.
Have you tried a different printer? Different USB port? Perhaps if it's the ports at the back try use the one at the front or vice versa.
Not sure if that would make a difference.
I don't have another printer to try it on. However, the PDFs I make from Indesign documents print fine, as do documents in Mail, Word, Excel, etc. I'm running the latest version of HP's printer driver software.
The reason I asked actually, I should have been clearer, is that I've seen many people having an issue with HP printers and InDesign.
I don't know what the resolution was.

This printer has worked fine with Indesign on various Macs for the past two years. This problem is a very recent one but I've been unable to identify anything specific that has changed between when it last worked fine and and when it first quit itself trying to print.
To avoid this crash try this workaround.
remove adobe PDF PPD from the following folders:
