1. Re: Best workflow CS5 with RedOne and MacBook Pro
Harm Millaard Sep 9, 2011 3:13 AM (in response to olivier madar)I am looking at the best workflow for the RedOne and my MacBookPro.
Get a desktop PC. RedOne is a very difficult codec to edit and a MBP does not meet the minimum requirements for editing with PR. The sheer number of pixels require a very fast disk setup, and the MBP only has one internal disk, lacks eSATA and the FW800 is just too slow for that material.

JSS1138 Sep 9, 2011 7:53 AM (in response to olivier madar)I have to second Harm's recommendation. Build yourself a new, powerful Windows 7 machine for this footage.

Todd_Kopriva Sep 9, 2011 10:29 AM (in response to JSS1138)I agree with the suggestion to use a more powerful computer, but---if you're stuck with the one that you have---you may find some useful tips for squeezing performance out of it here.

olivier madar Sep 9, 2011 11:08 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Thank you to all of you,
I am not an Apple maniac, (more probably RedOne maniac), and I just leave FCP.
I have to say that I like Adobe even if I am new to it. I agree te last macbookPro has an AMD video card, so no acceleration, but there is thunderbolt also. So it will be easy to get the most speedy hard drive with them. Plus, with magma expansion thunderbolt, i shall be able to plug the Red Rocket and quadro 4000 in it. So, I will wait until the first peripheral thunderbolt will be there.
If it does keep what it is promising, I shall leave Apple too very fast.
And what do you prefer between HP notebook and Dell ?

Neither, at least for video editing. Only Sager/Clevo come to mind.

Go with a laptop that is specifically designed for video editing

olivier madar Sep 9, 2011 1:54 PM (in response to John T Smith)I did not know these notebook specific video. But I live in France, and they don't sale here. That is why I said HP or Dell.
These "babies" seem very interesting. Have to find something near that in France.

John T Smith Sep 9, 2011 3:36 PM (in response to olivier madar)Oh... you might have mentioned France in your 1st message
Here is a UK company... at least the price will be in Euros... but I don't know if they will have what you want
http://3xs.scan.co.uk/Category.asp?SystemMasterCategoryID=14
Otherwise, look for...
-another brand laptop with the following features
-the newer sandy bridge 2720 or 2820 quad processor
-and nvidia graphics preferably the 460m, 485m is a bit much
-1280x900 display with OpenGL 2.0-compatible graphics card
-and 8 or 16 gig ram and Win7 64bit Pro
-and 2 internal 7200 HDDs minimum -

olivier madar Sep 10, 2011 2:06 AM (in response to John T Smith)Hi,
Thank you for the link. I also found eurocom with "panther" product. They seem very powerfull, but it is very expansive, heavy and loud.
After 1 hour looking at the best adobe notebook i could find (it is not really a question of the cost), I think I will stay with my Mac. Why ?
- Quad core Intel i7 2,3 Ghz : not so bad
- 8 G RAM : not so bad
- HD SSD 512 : good
- esata present : not so bad
- Mate screen 1920x1200 : very good
- graphic card AMD : not good for cs5
- 3 kg only : very good
- 4 hours running on battery : very good
- Quite cheap in fact : good
BUT, the real game changer will be thunderbolt port. It is curious that this intel technology was not promoted before than Apple takes it. Seems to be THE best choice for video editing for moderate cost.
Look at that :
http://www.magma.com/thunderbolt.asp
For 3 or 400 $, it will be possible to put at the same time RedRocket, quadro 4000 and Black magic card in the powerbook. Not to speak about hard drive, esata is far far away
I will buy it immediatly when it will be possible and I will make some tests.
Thank you to all, i shall give you informations soon.
