Meaning of layer name in brackets?

I know I've seen it somewhere, but I can't find it and I don't remember it ... what does it mean, when layer names are in brackets in the timeline? It seems, that I can get them all to disappear sometimes, but I can't reproduce it.

You have two options in the Timeline panel - Layer Name or Source Name.

When Layer name is selected by clicking the top of the column, if there are no renamed layers in the timeline you won't see brackets. If there are renamed layers in the comp then the layers that have not been re-named will show brackets.

IOW, if you see brackets you're seeing the Source Name but only if a layer somewhere in the composition has been renamed. You'll never see brackets with Source Name selected.

That's it, tnx! I had very subtle differences only, which is why I didn't notice the difference. It's page 120 in the manual, BTW ... but no mentioning of brackets.
