You cannot connect Flex Builder 2 directly to a data source unless you use an RDS adapter. If you are using Cold Fusion 7.0.2 on the backend, then you can use the CF connectivity plugin for FB2 and use the RDS viewer to connect to a data source in CF, display tables, etc. and create CFCs and AS Objects.
There may be 3rd party plugins for other data sources.
Please refer to
http://weblogs.macromedia.com/lin/archives/flex_2/fds/index.cfm for an
example of using Flex Data Services (not Flex Builder) to connect to a MySQL
db. Of course, you can use Flex Builder to write and compile the code.
Another alternate which I have found amazingly simple to use is ruby on rails. Here you can see a 6 line Rails application that retrievs all from mysql. Query is identical to: SELECT * FROM 'Reviews';
And it then renders the result in XML.
class ReviewsController < ApplicationController
@reviews = Review.find :all
render :xml => @reviews.to_xml
