Try using cut and paste instead?
That's a really helpful answer. A lot more work than just holding down a key while I make the move though.
Enable snapping (S), park the playhead at the beginning of the clip (easiest way to do that is select the clip and hit Shift+Home), and then drag the clip up or down in the track stack. It's not perfect, but it'll help keep it in place.

That is what i do also, put the playhead at the beginning of the clip, then the clip will
snap to the playhead in the next track.
