1. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 17, 2011 6:18 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)I don't know why part of my text turned white when I saved my question... but I will try it again
How do I get the new filters in the pixel bender menu? I download them from Pixel Bender Exchange but there are no instructions.I can't find them anywhere with google searches.
I tried just unzipping the files and putting the pbj and pdk files into the pixel Bender files folder in Photoshop, but that returns an error message when I attempt to use it.
I then tried just putting in the pdk files in since that is what is alredy in the folder, but I just get the same error message.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong. This is in the 64 version of Photoshop (Windows 7). I appreciate any help you can give me.

AIF Bob Sep 21, 2011 2:22 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Can you let us know what error message you're getting, and when you're getting it (on starting up Photoshop, on trying to run a Pixel bender filter etc.). Putting the pbk files into the Pixel Bender folder should be all that's necessary.
Bob

3. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 21, 2011 2:49 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)The Pixel Bender plug-in for Photoshop will not load/run ".pbj" files only ".pbk" and ".pbg" files. The "Pixel Bender Files" folder is the correct location for exposing new filters to the Pixel Bender plug-in. Were you ever able to use the filters originally installed by the Pixel Bender plug-in installer? Please post an example error message as requested by AIF Bob.

4. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 8:37 AM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Thanks for your answer. Knowing that I was doing it the way you are supposed to, suggested to me that it was not me or how I was doing it, but the problem was with the particular filter. Evidently, it was just the first filter that I downloaded and tried to install that did not work. The others all work fine by putting them in the Pixel Bender Files folder.
Now if I could just get the Pixel Bender to work in my 32-bit version of Photoshop. It is working great in 64-bit, but I am not able to get it installed in the 32 bit. Perhaps this should be a new thread, but if you have a quick fix, it would be nice to be able to use it in both versions. I have some favorite plugins that are not available for 64-bit yet, so I often work in 32, as well. I install it exactly the way I did for the 64 version, except 32 is selected in the Extension Manager. It appears to install, but it doesn't show up in the filters menu -- even though the files are there when I check the folders. No error message, it just doesn't show up in the menu. Thanks for your help.

5. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 11:27 AM (in response to AliceWoodrome)You're sure that the Pixel Bender plugin shows up as installed and enabled when you click "Photoshop CS5 32" in the Products pane in Extension Manager CS5? Do you see the "Pixel Bender.8bf" file in the ".../Program Files (x86)/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Plug-ins/Filters/" directory?

6. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 12:18 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Yes, the Pixel Blender plugin shows up when I click on Photoshop CS5 32, and the enabled box is checked. Also, the The Pixel Bender.8bf file is there in the /Plugin/Filters folder.
I had forgotten, however, that I do get a message when I first open up that version of PhotoShop. The program goes ahead and opens however, and I guess that is why I forgot about it. I copied the message below:
Owl Orphanage: Photoshop.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ??0ContextWindowed@OGL@AIF@@QAE@PAUHWND_@@ABVBufferFormat@12@W4teBuffering@Context@W4teMu ltisample@612@PAV612@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library aif_ogl.dll.
I suppose that has something to do with it, because when I uninstall Pixel Blender, I do not get the message when I open up Photoshop.
Thanks

7. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 12:42 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Yes, that error message definitely has something to do with why the Pixel Bender plugin is not running. What version of Photoshop CS5 are you running and which Pixel Bender plugin package did you download?

8. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 1:01 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)I have Photoshop version 12.0.2x32,
and I downloaded the pixel bender file from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/pixelbender.html
It is the one marked "Pixel Bender plug-in for Photoshop CS4 (Mac/Win 32-bit)"
I didn't see one for CS5, but then the 64-bit for CS4 works fine on my 64bit Version of Photoshop.
If that is the problem, where do I download the proper version for Photoshop version 12.0.2x32?
Thanks so much for your time

9. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 2:09 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)You need to be running the Pixel Bender plugin for CS5 (not CS4 or CS5.1). The fact that this is working in the 64-bit case is sheer luck. You can download the 32- and 64-bit installers from http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbenderplugin/.

10. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 3:33 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)I uninstalled and then installed the versions you suggested for both the 64 and the 32 bit versions of Photoshop.
There was now no error message when I open up Photoshop 32-bit... and Pixel Bender is now in the Filters menu -- so I suppose that is some progress, but when I click on it, I get the error message,
"Error: The operation could not be completed."
The"Pixel Bender files" folder is there and the Pixel Bender.8bf is in the "Plug-ins/Filters" folder. It shows in the Extension Manager as installed and the"Enabled" box is checked.
At least everything still works fine in the 64-bit version. Have we run out of things to try for the 32-bit version of Photoshop?
Thanks for hanging in there with me.

11. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 3:37 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)I just had a thought... Could it have anything to do with the fact that I am not able to enable GPU options in my 32-bit version of Photoshop? For some reason I can in the 64 bit version. Adobe Photoshop tech people have never been able to help me figure out why.

12. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 3:47 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Yes. Chances are something is going wrong that is preventing Photoshop from running on the GPU and the same problem is also affecting the Pixel Bender plugin. It's hard to say what is the actual cause of the problem. What graphics card are you using? Have you installed the latest graphics drivers from your card vendor?

14. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 7:08 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Well that sounds like you have the latest version. What information is reported for "Driver Provider," "Driver Date," and "Driver Version" on the Driver tab in Display Properties? Does the latest version of the Pixel Bender Toolkit (http://www.adobe.com/go/pixelbender_toolkit_zip/) run successfully on your machine?

15. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 22, 2011 7:54 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Yes, the tool kit runs on my machine, though I have to admit the syntax is beyond me at this point. I will have to let other people create the filters.
I could not find anything that said "Driver Provider" or"Driver Date". Maybe in my computer it is not quite the same arrangement. I have copied the information I find when I go to the NVIDA control panel, and click on System information. Perhaps it will tell you what you need to know

16. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 22, 2011 8:11 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Well, if the Toolkit is working then the plugin and Photoshop should be working in 32-bit mode.
Here's how to get the driver info I requested.
1. Right-click the Desktop and select "Screen resolution" from the contextual menu.
2. Click the "Advanced settings" text in the window that was opened in step 1.
3. Click the "Properties" button under "Adapter Type" on the "Adapter" tab in the properties window that was opened in step 2.
4. Select the "Driver" tab in the window that was opened in step 3. "Driver Provider," "Driver Date," and "Driver Version" are all listed on the "Driver" tab.
I don't expect this to yield any insights at this point but it's still worth reporting.
Did you uninstall the previous driver before installing the new driver? You might try the following:
1. Uninstall the current graphics driver via the "Programs and Features" control panel (look for the NVIDIA driver components and uninstall them)
2. Reboot your machine.
3. Reinstall the latest NVIDIA-provided graphics drivers (280.26).
4. Reboot your machine.
5. See if Photoshop and the plugin work correctly in 32-bit mode.
I'm at a loss at this time for why the toolkit, 64-bit Photoshop, and the 64-bit plugin work but 32-bit Photoshop and the 32-bit plugin do not.

17. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 23, 2011 6:55 AM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Thanks for the instruction on how to get the driver information you requested.
It is
Driver Provider NVIDIA
Driver Date 8/3/2011
Driver Version: 8.17.12.8026
No, I did not uninstall the old driver before installing the new. I didn't know that was advised, and I'm not sure I know enough to do it correctly.
There are 7 NVIDIA items listed in the Programs and Features window
NVIDIA 3D Vision Controller Driver 280.19
NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver 280.26
NVIDIA Display Control Panel
NVIDIA Graphics Driver 280.26
NVIDIA HD Audio Driver 1.2.23.3
NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.10.0514
NVIDIA Update 1.4.28
Do I uninstall the four that have driver in their name? or all of the NVIDIA items... or what?
I sure don't want to mess up my computer any further. The problem with the 32 bit photolshop and pixel bender is relatively minor, though it would be nice to solve it.
Thanks again

18. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
unique_screenname_here Sep 23, 2011 1:10 PM (in response to AliceWoodrome)Chances are if you uninstall "NVIDIA Graphics Driver" most of the other components will go with it. I tend to uninstall all the components with the vendor's name (NVIDIA in this case) in them as good practice when I'm updating drivers. That will sometimes require multiple uninstall reboot passes. Make sure you've downloaded the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers for your hardware and have the installer available on your system, should you choose to uninstall the current drivers, as it makes the process a bit smoother. I don't know that this will resolve the problem, but, as I mentioned before, I'm at a loss for why the toolkit, 64-bit Photoshop, and the 64-bit plugin work but 32-bit Photoshop and the 32-bit plugin do not.

19. Re: how do I install new filters in Pixel Bender
AliceWoodrome Sep 25, 2011 7:27 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Alas, after uninstalling the NVIDIA graphics driver and reinstalling it, it has changed nothing.
Thank for trying to help. I guess I will just have to go to the 64 version anytime I want to use Pixel Blender.
