1. Re: How do I play a LR slideshow on apple tv?
Brian Oakwood Sep 25, 2011 7:50 AM (in response to SF Ellen)Are you able to see the slideshow when you look in iTunes? If not, you will have to import the file into iTunes to make it available to AppleTV (I doubt that LR does this automatically). If you can see it (and play it) in iTunes and it still won't show up in AppleTV then there may be some sort of compatibility problem with the file format so you might want to try some different settings.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, just like Lightroom iTunes is not a filebrowser but a cataloguing app so it needs to be told about new files. What you should do is simply save your video to the desktop from iTunes and then drag the file into the itunes library. It well get copied over to the correct spot in your music folder. Now you can delete the copy of the video on the desktop. Doing this will make the video will show up on your AppleTV as iTunes now knows about it. I usually take exported video from Lightroom through handbrake first which lowers its filesize by a factor of 2 or 3 without loss of quality but that is not strictly necessary.

SF Ellen Sep 25, 2011 9:32 AM (in response to Jao vdL)Jao vdL,
That worked! Thank you so much. When I dragged my LR slideshow file into iTunes, it popped up in Apple TV under 'Movies'.
Thanks so much!
Do you have any suggestion for making my flat screen color match my monitor better? I calibrate my monitor using Color Eyes Display Pro, so I am aware that I may never have an exact match, but it would be great to be closer.
Also, what is 'handbrake'?
Thanks again!

Handbrake is a video conversion application. It transcodes DVDs, BluRay video or any simple video file such as those output by Lightroom into almost anything you want, but focused on files that iPhones and AppleTV understands. It's online here: http://handbrake.fr/ . I use it on all my video to lower the filesize significantly. I don't do a lot of video, but sometimes do "behind the scenes" stuff simply in iMovie, but the files that output are crazy large and can be really lowered in size simply by running them through handbrake.
Regarding the color matching, this can generally be done by calibrating the settings on your HDTV using something like a calibration disk. Generally these TVs (even if they are big name brands) come really badly calibrated out of the box to oversaturate color and give way too much contrast and far too high black levels as that is what consumers tend to like. They are also generally set up to sharpen the images, which you really do not want as it changes contrast (it impacts gamma) and such so turn off all sharpening and all dynamic contrast modes in the TVs menus. If you have kids, the Disney BluRay disks include a calibration tool that works really well. I have used the one on our Toy Story 3 BluRay disk to calibrate the living room HDTV. Afterwards I get really good matching results from it when streamed to from the AppleTV.

SF Ellen Sep 25, 2011 9:59 AM (in response to Jao vdL)Wow! Great info.
I just downloaded handbrake and it seems fairly intutive to use.
Really good info about the TV calibration. When I first played my slideshow, it looked shockingly awful. Way to bright and with a strong green cast. I changed the out of the box setting from 'standard' to 'movie', and while I have no idea what that affected, it made it look signifigantly closer to my calibrated monitor. I'll definitly turn off sharpening and dynamic modes as you suggest and find a calibration disk. Do you have any recommendations of specific brands? I havent got kids so no disney in this house, but my husband plays a lot of x-box so I wonder if those games come with anything?

6. Re: How do I play a LR slideshow on apple tv?
Jao vdL Sep 25, 2011 10:09 AM (in response to SF Ellen)CHanging into the Movie preset is a good idea to start. This usually makes
it go into a fairly standard set of parameters that should be close. From
there, look for DVDs or BluRays with a THX logo on it (you probably have
several). They will have a calibration tool in the extras somewhere that
will do quite a good job setting it up right to get the right black and
white point and gamma as well as tint. I found some instructions here after
a google search: http://www.hometheater.com/advicefromtheexperts/407cali/ .
Ignore the part of optimizing sharpness at the end. You want to keep that
control at zero if you are playing HD material from sources like a AppleTV
or a BluRay player as it artefacts your material terribly (in my opinion).
You can also buy specialized home theater calibration discs on amazon and
many other places but I have not used those.
