Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?
Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...
It's not clear to me how I find my DNG converter preferences. When I open the downloader in Bridge 'preferences' is grayed out in the drop down menu. When I click on DNG conversion settings I find nothing that allows me to check DNG Converter 6.4.1 or anything to click on to change preferences. How do I update CS4 to ACR 5.7? What is ACR 5.7?
I figured out that ACR must mean Adobe Camera RAW. I updated CS5 to camera raw 6.4.1. I tried to update CS4 to ACR 5.7 but it failed to install after three attempts. I downloaded a raw file using my CS5 downloader in Bridge converting it to a DNG. I could see it and open it in CS5 but not CS4.

You'll need to update ACR for CS4 to the most recent version...don't know why the update failed, but that's what you need. But personally, I would wast the time trying to open raw images in ACR 5.x when you have ACR 6.x. ACR 6.x is seriously better...
