Adobe doesn't answer questions like this. At some point, there will either be a release or a beta or something, and we won't find out about it until it happens.

S4ENO Sep 28, 2011 9:31 AM (in response to Lee Jay)I understand that Adobe will not answer this but have you seen any sign of activities or news that will indicate something will happen in the next 6 months?
How old is LR3 and how old is LR2?

6. Re: When will LR4 arrive?
ssprengel Sep 28, 2011 10:23 AM (in response to JimHess)One common reason is someone wants to upgrade their obsolete version, and wants to know if upgrading to LR 3 would be a waste if LR 4 is just around the corner.
I would guess LR 4 would be out next year, not close to the beginning of the year, and there is usually a public beta weeks if not months, before, so it won’t be w/o warning. The major releases of Lightroom and Photoshop will be somewhat synchronized because they share the same RAW engine, although sometimes they are more than a month apart.
Remember, that LR 2.x got all the way up to 2.7 about the same time LR 3 came out so LR 3 might have a couple more revs before LR 4.

Well for me personally i've been playing with the 30day trial of Capture One and on the verge of switching applications for enhancments such as layers, keystoning, flawless tethering (with additional app) and colour controls.. I'd be tempted to hold off if i knew Adobe was planning such features or something new for the near future.
I thought LR3 over 2 offered very little in the way of innovation, it ruled the roost up until then... Now i'm not so sure and like the OP, maybe a little reasurance wouldn't go a miss.
It just feels stagnant to me at the moment, it's a concern.

The accuracy of raw conversion (greatly improved processing), dramatically improved noise control, better sharpening, tethered shooting, point curves, lens correction and perspective control, publish services... Those may not be worth much to you, but they certainly were to me.

Lightroom 3 was for me a huge improvement over Lightroom 2. If you didn't see and appreciate the improvements that were there then it would be my guess that you won't see much difference in Lightroom 4. I don't have any information on any new version, and maybe my response is a little narrowminded because I haven't used many other programs. I have become accustomed to the Lightroom workflow and have found it to be extremely well-suited for my needs. If you are looking for something drastically different or "improved" then it might do you well to look elsewhere.
Added later: this is just a personal observation. It seems to me that some people want to be entertained by their image editing software, much the same as some people like to be entertained by the computer games that they play. And, like computer games, we become proficient at using tools such as Lightroom and we want something different. It doesn't necessarily have to be "better" in any specific way. It just has to be different. I know that I don't use Lightroom to its full potential. I know that I could probably get better results if I would push myself a little bit. But I have a workflow that works for me and I liked the results. And I seriously doubt that a new version of Lightroom was really render a much different result. At least it wouldn't be a result that would be strikingly or noticeably "improved". I might be wrong, would love to be. When Lightroom 4 is released I will probably get it and explore what it has new to offer. But in all probability my images will still look pretty much the same. Go ahead and criticize my statement. But that's just the way I feel.

It's close to two years since LR3 arrived and I am interested in new improvements. I'm not going to change my tool but think the change from LR2 was very usefull and hope we soon see another evolution.

Agreed except for tethering, but i used the word 'innovation' not improved. I'm not too phased by it for now, as a fashion and beauty photographer a trip to photoshop is a given anyway. It is however pretty obvious why nearly all 'professional' portrait, fashion and beauty photographers who tether in a studio will opt for C1 over LR3 which will ultimately let them down in a time of need (tethering).
LR is a great prosumer tool for all those that use it and i can't see myself using anything else for my personal work. It's a great tool for general photography that doesn't need a pass through Photoshop. But for studio and beauty it's not reliable enough for me (personally). I wish it was as certain brush tools are actually a faster and more creative alternative to photoshop.
LR is not something i just picked up, i was a pre-beta tester well before version 1 came to fruition and received my free copy from T. Hogerty like selected others but after all this time it still leaves many professional studio photographers a in the cold.
It's a great product, it should be better.
Added Later:
Maybe we're seeing LR uncomfortably encroaching on Photoshop's territory which will impede future updates, something the competition doesn't have to worry about..
PS: I have to use Chrome to reply to threads, it's stopped working on Safari 5.1.. Spellcheck doesn't pick up the obvious mistakes either and seems to bar Apple's built in ability completely.. All since the new forums started.

It is most certainly not a prosumer tool. It is far too difficult to master to be just for fans and avid consumers.
Go onto Google Plus and look for the myriad of professional photographers and see how many use LR.
I have also used it from the beta and it is as important to me as my camera, lenses and tripod. I use it far more than photoshop and I'd happily never use PS again - Id' still have to use GIMP or similar, but a prosumer tool it is not.
I know many a pro studio photographer who uses it rather than a light meter, tethered and calibrated to a mac laptop or pc. I know many pros who use it all the time.
Yup fans, and for personal use it may well be used for, but it is a stunning professional piece of software even with its flaws

Rainydaiz Sep 29, 2011 2:19 AM (in response to hamish niven)Oh please... "difficult to master"
Adobe Premiere or illustrator maybe but certainly not LR.. It's a doddle if you have an ounce of computer literacy and can slide something left or right.

and keywording, and arranging image for clients, and getting batch processes working and work flows.
diddling with sliders is as you say something for any computer literate person, but creating images with a digital tool and asset managing and finding images from 10,000's and 3 years ago is a little more challenging.
I'm glad you learned it quickly. Its taken me a long while to get it where I want it to be, to where I can get images I'm happy with and tethering working properly.
