The Fill vs Opacity in the Layers Panel

I don't understand how the Fill works in the Layers Panel.  I understand how opacity affect layers but something funny happens when using Fill for decreasing opacity and then merging layers.  I just don't use, but I'm sure it has some special purpose.

      Using CS4 on a mac

      Thanks in Advance

Fill will adjust the opacity of only actual pixels on a layer. It will not adjust things like Layer Styles since those pixels aren't actually on the layer.

Opacity will adjust the entire visible contents of a layer

It's pretty easy to see the differnce....

Make 2 layers. Draw a rectangle on both layers. Add Layer Style > Stroke to both rectangles. Adjust one layer to have 50% Fill and the other to have 50% Opacity.
