How are you accessing the crop tool, using the icon in the tool bar or the keyboard shortcut? What happens when you try it? What version of photoshop do you have? What system are you using? What version of OS are you using? Could you post some screen shots of what is happening?

Your short and sweet post doesn't really cut it does it? That was meant as a kind of joke, but I hope you see my point.

            In answer to your questions:

            1.  Win7 x64  SP 1 ... no version number to be found (??)

            2. Photoshop   v. 12.0.4 x64

            3.  Screen shots attached

            Observations

            a.  'C'  brings up Crop Tool

            b.  Image > Crop needs to have object selected  as usual

            c.  Can't escape Crop  by hitting Escape or Return  buttons.

            d.  It is not a Smart Layer

As you can see,  Crop  starts out where expected ...  but that's it!

Sorry about that .    You are right unless the answer is obvious!

I recently switched from WinXP  to Win7  and had a similar problem

(with something else).  I documented the problem and system at  great

length.  I received a very short reply with regard to a new switch.

My lengthy documentation was  totally unnecessary.   Hence if this

were something equally  obvious and trivial, I didn't want to waste a

lot of time documenting  it.   I am a retired professional.

If it weren't obvious to you,  I was looking for your guidance.  You

gave it to me ... and here are some screen shots.

Once you've got the crop region as you see it in the second image, if you click the checkmark at the top of the Photoshop main window to complete the crop, what happens?  Does the X work to abort the crop?

This can get very frustrating, n'est pas!!

                    1. ...  if you click the checkmark at the top of the Photoshop main

window to complete the crop, what happens?

Some times it is an undo, and some times it completes the crop.  In

the former case, the Copy tool  (CT) nodes are still there and

usually cannot be dismissed by esc or CR.

                    2. Does the X work to abort the crop?

What is X??     If you mean  esc,  on rare instances it will

eliminate the  CT nodes but most of the time it does nothing

In my version of Photoshop it is not an X, but a crossed-through circle, I think this is what Noel meant.  Clicking it should abort the crop action and remove the selection.  I have no idea why this isn't working for you.  Have you tried re-setting your Photoshop preferences to their defaults?  I don't know if it would help in your case, but it seems to be a widely recommended action for all sorts of mysterious Photoshop behavior.  You can find a description of how to reset the preferences in many threads, including here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3938943#3938943

It seems to me, based on your clarifications, that you're running into a bona fide problem (opposed to operating Photoshop improperly, which unfortunately sometimes does happen).

It might just be a problem with display updates...  Try temporarily disabling OpenGL Drawing in the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog (and restarting Photoshop before testing).  If this corrects the problem, then you very likely need a display driver update - visit the web site of the maker of your video card and download/install their latest driver.  Remember to re-enable OpenGL afterward.

Here's more info on OpenGL and Photoshop's use of your GPU:

I can't crop either. I prepare my photos in RAW and then as a psd, I crop and the photo disappears. Does the same thing if I do it in jpg. I can retrieve the photo by going back so it's not lost. What I get is a blank screen on my desktop. When I look at the little box at the right in layers, the box is dark gray. Have I enabled something without realizing it or blocked something? Please advise. I love my CS5 and hate to have it not working.
