Here are a couple of videos that actually show how to use the motion tracking features:

There is only the cross in the centre.
I don't have this book with me, so I can't see what you're referring to, but there is just one "cross". There is only one attach point. It is in the center by default, but you can move it wherever you want.

Moving the attach point doesn't move the search region or feature region. That's the whole point. The attach point is where a keyframe will be placed; you can put that anywhere relative to the search region and feature region.

If the Tracker points only have one cross indicating the Attach point in the center - then the book is misleading.
