Brush opacity shortcuts keep changing zoom level? What?

Alright, this is driving me bleeping bonkers.

I've been upgraded to CS5.5 here at work for about a week now and I'm working on my first illustration project with the new Photoshop. Now usually when I'm painting with the brush tool I can hit any of the numbers on my keyboard and the opacity changes accordly. But now, for some reason, at random times, hitting those buttons changes my zoom  to a seemingly random zoom level. I've made sure I'm in the brush or eraser tool, my cursor is over my canvas (not off in some corner of the screen), I'm hitting nothing else other than a single number key.... and it still does it. And it isn't regular, either. I get the opacity to change as expected ten times, then I get zoomed in to 3200% the eleventh time, it works again a few more times, then whoops! I'm at 6% zoom.

And, to add insult to injury, once it's tossed me to the random zoom level, I can't hit "Z" and switch to the zoom tool; it ignores me. I have to actually click on the zoom tool in the tools pallete to zoom myself back where I was.

Also, sometimes instead of changing the zoom, it seems to do nothing until I try and click something else in which case I get a dialog box saying I entered an invalid value. This makes me think that it's trying to change a value box somewhere that I'm not seeing.

I understand if the shortcuts have changed so it's probably operator error, so what in the world am I doing wrong? How can I do it right?

The setup I'm using: Adobe Photoshop Extended CS5.5 on a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.1. Also, using an Intuos3 tablet as my input device, should that change the way Photoshop interprets my desperate attempts to communicate with it.
