Upgraded to CS5, now can't publish pages.

    rsford31 Community Member

I upgraded to CS5 from CS3 and am now getting the error "either the network is unavailable or you don't have permission to publish to this location". Any ideas?

I tried the URL and get an error.

Just another note. I upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and am getting “either the network is unavailable or you don't have permission to publish to this location” error. However another woman at the office has CS4 on her machine and is able to connect to the same server and to the same site without any issues.

            Solution 1: Verify network access

There is network access. I had the client ftp to the server without using contribute. She was able to get to the server and access her site folder.

Solution 2: Check your access permissions

The FTP account the client uses has Modify, Read and Write permissions.

Solution 3: Confirm that all assets in the page are correctly linked

            1. I went through my web server logs on the date that the user last tried to connect to her site. I found a few entries where /Scripts/swfobject_modified.js referenced.

            2. The swfobject_modified.js found with 404 areas from step 1 where removed all of the site pages of the public site.

            3. My client is still receiving the “Either the network is unavailable, or you don’t have permission to publish to this location

There are no Spry assets being utilized in this site.

It should be noted that a coworker at the same site as my client is using CS4 to access the same webserver and the same web site. She has NO issues making changes to the site.

I am also seeing the same issue.  I have a client who is using Contribute CS3, and was having trouble editing certain pages. So, I enabled Contribute in CS5 trial. Bad move. Now she cannot use the new contribute Keys and I get the error, when I try to reactivate Contribute CS3, that it is being administered by a newer version and I cannot create a new connection in CS3.   This is a real mess. I shouldn't have to tell the client to spend $$ to be able to do what she has been doing all along...  I cannot get her new keys to use, so we are SOL...

              Any ideas or solutions???

The frustrating thing is in the “Discussions in Contribute General Discussion” forum “Dominic Michael” provided a solution to “Madevilz3” but sent it as a private message. The solutions was never displayed in the forum for everyone to see. I could have possible have had this issue resolved (as well as yourself) already…Pretty frustrating…

For "Madevilz3" the soultion was the lock on menu.js file, which was a spry file.

Are there any other javascript files .... example  swfobject_modified.js as mentioned in the KB article check if it is locked

When I sent a new key and tried to open it in Contribute 3, even though I turned on compatibility and transition, it said:  Cannot open, encryption method is unknown...

So the encrypt from CS5 cannot be read in CS 3

                    Bummer.

When I had the client set up her connection in CS5 I had her check off Transition Mode. She’s the administrator. The other person in her office as CS4 and is not an administrator (she’s a publisher).

Checking off Transition Mode for my client yielded the same error as reported below.

I'm in the same boat and have not had any success. Strangely enough, I happen to have Contribute CS5.1 on my machine and I'm able to get everything to work as intended.

However, I have another computer here next to me running CS5.0 that I'm trying to configure. No matter what I try (and I've tried just about everything), whenever I try to modify an existing page I get the "either the network is unavailable or you don't have permission to publish to this location" error. I can create new pages, no problem, but trying to modify an existing one displays that error.

I am out of options and now have to suck it up and tell a coworker that she wasted departmental money and that they will now have to purchase Dreamweaver or some other editor, because the program I told them to purchase apparently will not work.

I've verified the conntections through multiple ftp programs, cleared out the locks on the server AND on my local machine. Completely deleted the local user profile and recreated it, tried uninstalling/reinstalling, nothing I try works. I've even sat on support with Adobe for a couple of hours, but all of their support personnel are non-english native speakers. So, of course, we can barely communicate, and all they do is suggest everything I've already tried, and when that fails they claim their must be something wrong with my configuration, or something. I'm done, I can't spend another week beating my head against this program.

I will never use Contribute again, what a piece of trash.

I confirmed that my client could ftp to our server from her machine. Basically checked off all the things they suggested doing on their support page. I ended up calling support. I had wanted to do a conference call with my client as they are in a different community than I am but could not get a hold of her. The support person had me check a couple of things on my end ie. ftp using my clients log in credentials and add/modify/delete folders on the server which I was able to. The support person wanted to try ftp’ing to our server but I told them they couldn’t because it’s behind a firewall. Our clients are internal and therefore can access our server with the correct credentials.

Later on the support person contacted my client directly and suggested that she download the trial version of CS5 and install it on a different machine (she had CS3 and upgraded to CS5 on her computer). She tried, much to my disappointment to tell my client that there was an issue with her connecting to our server because she (the support person) could not connect even after I told her she wouldn’t be able to.

So, my client did install the trial version of CS5 on another machine and it worked. I started thinking either there was something messed up on her machine or it was a bad install. Since she had a copy of CS3 I got her to uninstall Contribute, re-install CS3 and the CS5 upgrade and it worked.

Have you tried ftp’ing to your server using the same credentials as what are stored in Contribute using a command prompt or another application like CuteFTP? And you confirmed that you can add/modify/delete folders while ftp’d onto the server? Has your CS5.0 ever worked i.e. did you have it installed on a different machine and it worked? Can you uninstall Contribute 5.0 and download the trial and see if it works?

Sorry! I’m just trying to think of things to get you going. I know it’s frustrating. I’ve definitely been there! The support person I had talked to was actually pretty good. She emailed and called us at our convenience. It’s unfortunate that I was expecting to have experience similar to yours.

It's especially frustrating because it shouldn't be this difficult, I mean I just want to login to a site via ftp and make very simple HTML edits to a web page..it's not like I'm trying to connect to a dynamic database driven site comlete with mountains of scripts and custom functionality...

This is actually a brand new machine, so there aren't any existing Contribute installations to deal with; this is simply Contribute CS5.0, fresh install.

But yes, I've tried multiple ftp clients, and I am able to read/write/delete/create/modify, etc on all clients. So it's definitely not an ftp permissions issue.

I have never gotten CS5.0 to properly work anywhere. It's always that same error: "either the network is unavailable or you don't have permission to publish to this location" when I attempt to modify an existing page. However, I can create new pages; but this isn't terribly helpful because it would be ridiculous to have to copy an existing page, make the desired changes to the copy, then upload it to the server, and then manually overwrite the page I'm trying to change (which was actually a solution a support person thought was viable!).

I did try uninstalling cs5.0 and then downloading the trial and installing that. However, I did input a serial number when installing the trial, so I guess actually didn't try running it as a trial....maybe something to try, but that doesn't seem very likely.

However, it DOES work on my laptop, but that's running CS5.1 which, from my understanding, is supposed to be the exact same as 5.0, but I find that hard to believe.

Oh well though, lesson learned I suppose. I will be sure to strongly advise my clients against using Contribute in the future.

Thanks for your help either way, I was surprised to even get a response.
