PrE9 mts files in organizer and PrE9

    germanica

Did anybody experience problem with mts files being properly read (video and audio) in organizer, but once imported in PrE9.0 only video is imported.

I guess if they are properly read in organizer, this means that the appropriate codec is installed on my system (Win 7 ultimate 64bits).

So why only video is imported?

      Thanks for any suggestion

In addition to having the proper codecs installed on your computer, you must have your Premiere Elements project set up to match the specs of the .mts video in order to edit this video in the program.

Although Windows 7 64-bit may have some other issues. This has most likely been resolved in version 10 of the program, which is now 64-bit compatible.

Ok, but the system proposes an automatic set up of the project when you import the file.

Is that not the correct way to proceed?

My mts files are 1440x1080 25fps Sequence type : MPEG or 1920x1080 25fps Sequence type : MPEG

If I have to set up project manually, how should I do it regarding the above data?

            Thanks

One thing to remember is that there are basically three "levels" of CODEC's:

              1. Playback of AV files
              2. Encoding of AV files
              3. Editing of AV files

The first is pretty much a universal, in that if the CODEC is installed, most players can use it for playback. Some players, like VLC Player, MediaPlayer Classic HC, and some others, actually contain many CODEC's, beyond what is installed in the system's OS.

Encoding is a bit more tricky, as the program (whether a player, or an editor) must be able to USE that particular CODEC. Not all can.

Editing is much more limited sub-set, in that again, the editor must be able to work with that CODEC.

This ARTICLE goes into more detail.

Now, and in the cited case, Organizer is really just a player and cataloging application. It can work with most installed CODEC's, though there are exceptions. The same holds for the Source Monitor in PrE. It is a player, and just reads and displays the file with the system's installed CODEC's. Things get much more complicated, however, when one goes to edit that file in PrE. It can ONLY work with a much smaller sub-set of the installed CODEC's. Many that work in various players, will just NOT work in PrE (or PrPro). Now, some NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs are better at working with certain CODEC's, that PrE chokes on. I find a prime example of this with the DivX CODEC's (several versions), that PrE usually will not work with, but CyberLink's PowerDirector will usually handle. That is but one example. There are many NLE programs, that WILL work with various CODEC's, that PrE refuses to handle, because of the design choices made by Adobe and coded into the program.

When one runs across a file, with a CODEC that PrE does not handle natively, the best course of action is to either go to the source material, before it was Encoded with that CODEC, or to convert that file to a CODEC, that PrE can work with.

Good luck, and hope that this helps,

So, finally the easiest way for me to succed in having both video file and audio track in my project, might be to extract the audio from tha file with another piece of sotfware and put it back into my project. Among all these formats, which one  would you choose that would be a good compromise?

                mp3, mp4, mp2, aac, ogg, wma, flac, m4a, wav.

                Thanks fot the teaching.

                  WAV. No question.

I will strongly second Steve's suggestion - PCM/WAV, and ideally at 48KHz 16-bit. It does not get any better, than that.

                    Good luck,

OK thank you I'll do so.

But just one thinking. If I can do so with extracting audio from an mts file and putting it back into my Pre9 project, it seems so simple, why Pre9 is not able to do so.

I can understand that editing, and cuting the file to mount it with other pieces of files might be a tricky job for programmers, but here we are just talking about extracting video and audio files into Pre9 project this should not be so difficult.

Again thank you for teaching me.

Perhaps I just missed it above, but what is the Audio CODEC in your file?

If you are not sure, then either G-Spot, or MediaInfo (both great and both free) should be able to tell you.

Good luck, and let us know just a bit more about the file, please.

From the MediaInfo results, my deduction is that I need AC3 codec. So I installed AC3 filter on my LabTop (Compaq 6710). Unfortunately this does work either. May be AC3 filter is not configure properly. This I don't know.

At the moment what works is, the extraction of the audio file to WAV format with another software and I put both the video and the WAV file back into my PrE  project.

Do you have any other suggestion.

For several versions now, PrE has had full AC3 capability, so you should not need another version of the CODEC. So long as the stream is 100% Dolby Digital compliant AC3, PrE should just handle it. I do not know what would be the issue.

One course of action would be to do a Repair Install of PrE, to see if some necessary .dll file has been corrupted, or perhaps lost to the Registry.

Otherwise, I am out of ideas, but maybe others can jump in with some helpful tips.

                              Good luck,

I already reinstaledl it once, but I'll do it again to see if  by any chance this would change something.

                                God help me!!!

Don't close it yet, as we are hoping that you will report that a Repair Install fixes things.

Unless there is some problem with the AC3 Audio stream, PrE should be able to just natively handle things.

If not, there is a workaround, should you not be able to figure out the underlying issue. Obviously, finding the exact problem is the best, but if not, then here is the workaround:

Rip the Audio from the AV file. I use Adobe Audition for this, but the great, free audio-editing program, Audacity, works well too. Then, just Save that Audio as a PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and Import that into PrE. Place it on an empty Audio Track, and with the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the red edit line) at the exact Head of the Video, and Snap ON, align the WAV Clip. That should handle things, and let you get to editing.

Good luck, and please report your success,

OK I'll keep you inform after reinstalling PrE9, but this will be next week as here in France week end has already started.

                                    Have a nice week end.

Well, I re-installed PrE9, but nothing changed. No audio track in my project.

Hereunder are specifications from my Sony Handycam HDR-XR520E:

                                      HD 1080:50i

                                      Video format :

                                      HD:MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 AVCHD FORMAT compatible

                                      SD : MPEG2-PS

                                      Audio : Dolby Digital 2ch/5.1ch

                                      Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator

Does this mean that the needed CODEC is not AC3?

From those specs. it appears that your camera shoots with DD (Dolby Digital) AC3, in either 2-channel (stereo), or 5.1 (surround sound). The Audio Stream should Import just fine. Once you Import, do give PrE a few minutes to Conform the Audio Stream. The time to do this relates to the Duration of the Clip, and the speed of your computer.

                                        Good luck,

Coming back to my problem, I still can't get audio track into my rpoject when trying to import mts files. If I try to import m2ts files, everything is working fine.

What does this say to you Bill?

What happens if you rename the extension of the problem file from .mts to .m2ts before trying to import it?

                                            Cheers,

Yes, I tried it at once after writing the above answer, but unfortunately it doesn't work too. Finally I decided to install PrE10 trial edition after having uninstalled PrE9(full uninstallation) and everything is working fine. So I really do not undestand what is the problem with PrE9 and mts files.

Do you have the patch? 9.0.1? You can get it from Help->Updates. That had some fixes for audio issues.
