Does the splash screen complete and disappear before the crash? If not, what's the last message you see in the splash screen?
If it does, make sure the Recovery folder is empty and try again. It may be a bad file from a previous crash.
Fianlly, if you have a crash report, upload it to PateBin.com, NOT here, and then post a link to it here, and whyen he gets a moment, John will take a look, or you can try to decipher it yourself using the information in Guide to Interpreting InDesign Crash Reports | InDesignSecrets
Thanks for the quick reply, I have left the office for the weekend so will try on Monday and will let you know how it goes.
I'm not able to interpret the crash report, but perhaps John can. One thing you might try is removing the PMWelcomeScreen plug-in from /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/Plug-Ins/PMPack and putting it on your desktop temporarily. I don't think this is the same as the IStartupScreen where you seem to be crashing, though, so it probably won't help.
Do you currently see the startup screen (you may have to put that plugin back, or check before removing)? There should be a series of messages that flash across the lower area. What's the last one you see?
Have you recently added any fonts or updated the font manager?
I tried removing the PMWelcomeScreen plug-in but it did'nt help
I do see the startup screen but only for about 5 seconds, I see the message Initialising, then its gone and the "InDesign quit unexpectedly" box pops up.
No I have not added any fonts or updated my font manager, I'm using FontExplorer XPro Version 2.5.2
Thanks for your assistance so far.
Take a look at this link: Replace Your Preferences
I don't see that we've tried that yet, either. I don't really expect it to work, but it's quick and fairly painless. I'm beginning to think this might be a permissions problem on a folder that ID is trying to write to during the startup.
Where's John when we need him?
You are a lifesaver Peter, I followed your instructions re the Prefs and it is starting up OK, I will run it today and let you know how if its still working in the morning.
Thanks again for giving your time to help me.
Regards Paul Harris......
Sorry, I was away for the weekend.
Though the crash report isn't all that revealing...somewhere in InDesign's initialization. Hard to say why. Glad to hear the prefs reset worked.
I'm very happy, 24 hours on and no problems.
Thanks again Peter.
Well, I'm really glad trashing the prefs seems to have worked, but sorry I didn't think to suggest it before you jumped through those other hoops.
