By default, Adobe Reader X and Acrobat X will use Read Mode when displaying a PDF in a browser window, unless the document specifies that one of the sidebars sould be opened. Read Mode has no toolbars, instead it has a black head-up display which is visible when hovering over the page.
You can change this in your preferences (open Adobe Reader on the desktop to access the preferences), or press F8 to display the toolbars on the fly.
Hi The F8 seemed to put up the Adobe menu bar on several tests.
Couldn't find preferences on desktop opening of adobe reader.

Edit > Preferences (Cmd-K or Ctrl-K)
Internet > uncheck "Display in Read Mode by default"
