You may want to try the following.
Remove all traces of Reader (not only the program) from your system using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. This is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can produce problems with Win 7, but you can still download it from from places like

and perform a clean install.
I have no traces of the reader on my computer. I am using Windows XP as apposed to windows 7.
When I try to upload the reader from the adobe website it saves file, then when I click run, it comes up installation error, failed to initialise

Well, you need to be a little bit more specific than that...
- what means "cannot" - what happens when you try?
- what is your operating system?
- "sent" - you mean by email? what is your email client?
When I try to open it, it opens microsoft office word, but instead of showing the document, a new window appears with codes all over it and it makes no sense.
