Post a screenshot of your Photoshop file and the layers panel unless it's CMYK color (or possibly Lab Color). If it is, change the color to RGB.
There's no reason not to have the option of importing as a composition in the first dialogue, but the file will import as only a single layer and may not work at all.

I tend to agree with Rick. Probably the wrong color mode and AE is only using the composite image stored in teh file for compatibility reasons. On that note, something similar might happen if the file contains smart objects or other more recent additions to the PSD spec and has not been saved with teh maximum compatibility setting in PS, meaning there is no rasterized preview data for each layer which AE could use for these kind of things...
Thank you. It is the color that's causing the issue. I changed it to rgb and AE is able to import properly. Lesson learned.
