No. Reader opens a new window for each document you open.
In the properties of the Windows 7 taskbar you can let group the icons.
Unfortunately, the option to group also means large icons, which I don't want. I use the taskbar down the left side and with small icons and labels, I get a lot of possible open windows. Frankly, the icons are not always sufficiently distinctive.

No. You can use small icons and grouping.
Taskbar->Properties. There is a combo for Taskbar buttons with values
Always Combine, Hide Labels
Combine when taskbar is full
None of these gives me small icons, labels, and combining as normal options.
What I don't get is that I had fewer problems in this regard before Windows 7 because the apps themselves included the option to combine.
I use the option for small symbols.
Yes, but small icons and no labels makes it hard to tell some applications apart.
My preference, really, which is why this question is on an Adobe forum and not a Windows forum, is to make the choice application by application. Multiple instances of Explorer are useful because the label provides a clue as to which instance is sitting where in the filesystem. Multiple instances of Firefox likewise because I can tell which is which. Multiple copies of Word I don't want because I sometimes have a lot of documents open and it is better to just switch windows in the application. Likewise Excel.
On my old box, I was reading this same documention in Acrobat Professional 8 and it would obey the open cross links in the same window option. Thus, I could start with the top page and open three or four manuals and only have one entry on the task bar. If I had two sets at the same time, like I do now with regular release and beta, then I might have two, one for each top level page. Now I have 5 because I have two top level and three manuals open.

This option was removed with version 9.
