Rename source files from clip names?

In FCP7 there is a very handy feature that allows you to rename the source file to match the name of the clip.

This is extremely helpful when you rename clips to be more appropriate/descriptive in a project and want to change the source name to match.

Is there anyway to do something similar in Premier Pro CS5.5 or do you have to rename every source clip manually and then reconnect???

Well... not really (but sort of). But there's actually a good reason why you don't want to do this. Where as FCP only works with QuickTime files where renaming the source files to match the clip names is harmless, Premiere Pro works with a huge variety of native formats including tapeless formats that require specific file naming and folder structures. If you renamed the source file to match the clip names, the formats could become unreadable by many devices and applications. Our concept is "do no harm".

However... if you want to consolidate and rename your source files to match your clip names (this is the "sort of" part), you can do that through Project Manager (Project > Project Manager).  Just select the option to "Rename Media Files to Match Clip Names" when trimming your project. The reason this option is available here without the worry of corrupting your tapeless media structures is that Premiere Pro makes new copies of the media files and puts them in a new location. This way the original media remains untouched and isn't harmed. Premiere Pro can still access and open these files because it doesn't require specific folder structures and naming conventions to import the files. Other applications and devices that do require these folder structures and naming conventions can still access the original source media they were created from.

Ah I can understand the dilemma there. Thanks for the quick response.
