Premiere Pro CS4 problems with very large AVI file

    reindeer4 Community Member

Hi.  I have a JVC Everio camcorder that saves video in its own proprietary .MOD format.

I used the Prism converter to turn this into an uncompressed AVI file - raising the size of a 6 minute video from 400MB up to 2.5GB.

If I simply double click the video on my Windows 7 desktop, both the Audio and Video components play normally in my Windows Media Player.

If I bring the footage into After Effects CS4, the Video Works but not the audio.

If I try to bring the large AVI into Premiere Pro CS4, the whole  5 minute video is squeezed into roughly 40 seconds even though it registers as the full 6 minute video in both the tiny preview window at top left and in the Source Display area.  Once the playhead reaches 40 seconds, however, the video just remains on the last frame.  The audio waveform shows up properly in the timeline and plays properly (so while video remains stuck on last frame at 4 minutes, the audio is still playing).

Any idea what's going on or how to fix this?

I it's a problem with the prism converter going from .mod to .avi, wasn't sure why video would play perfectly well in Windows Media Player.

Or is this a situation where the file is just to large for 32 bit Premiere Pro (I have a windows 7, 64 bit system with 24GB RAM, but CS4 is 32 bit except for Photoshop).

I need to do a key on the footage to pull out Greenscreened background, and I usually create Dynamic Link between AFX and PremierePro as part of my workflow.

I can probably manage a workaround by doing video in AFX, then rendering only the 2 minute chunk I need, and then compressing to FLV and re-joining with the audio which I can pull from premiere pro - but I'll be working with such files a lot, and that would get fairly cumbersome so trying to figure out what's going wrong and get a better solution.

Thanks for any suggestions / help.

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below

          .

          For PC http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

          For Mac http://mediainfo.massanti.com/

          .

Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information... and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline, which indicates a mismatch between video and project

CS4 is probably chocking on the uncompressed avi.

Is it possible to convert to an avi with say the lagarith codec?

This will give a much smaller file.

Avoid staying connected with DL, export instead.

As for the RAM, Premiere wont adress more then 4 gig.

John - thanks for that link.  I downloaded the Windows program there and followed the instructions to make a BAT file that converts the encoded AVI to mp4 - and Premiere Pro was then able to import the video portion of the AVI without any problem, though the Audio did not come in.

Tried to do Dynamic Link with AFX (both in CS4) and ran into problems, and not sure if exporting media worked right either.  Too tired now.  I'll try again in the morning and post back.  Thanks for the help.
