    Bought a Flash 8 Template

    joepd Level 1

I bought a Flash 8 template for one of my customers.  Getting help is like pulling teeth. I make changes by
modifying a .txt file and I observe by clicking index.html. The expressions in the .txt file look like:

      &menu1=Home Page

      &menu2=About Us

      etc...

I don't recognize the language.  I have no idea what I am working with.  I have CS3 so I have Flash CS3.

I have FTPed what I have and the URL is www.danceations.com  I feel like I am out of my element.  Any help

      would be appreciated.

The text file appears to be providing no more than simple name=value pairs, which if you bought the template, the template should be taking care of processing the text file.  If you don't know what to do with either file, you probably need to hire someone to do this for you.

Thank you.  No I know that the text file drives the Index.html and the

.swf is embedded in the index.html but I was wondering what type of script or

whatever is the .txt file made up from.  For instance I changed the center

picture and I changed the song being played but I want to change more.  For

example I wanted to do away with the open and close player.  I removed the

top layer in the Flash.fla file and resaved and republished the .swf but

unfortunately it removed the song i wanted played. I am fairly competent but

this setup has me a bit stumped.

The text file most likely is used by the swf, not the index.html file - html cannot read data files. The text file is really not in any form of script... it is a data file, written as I said already in name=value pairs.  The ampersands are a common identifier for a new pair that various programs are designed to decipher, including Flash/Actionscript.

If you removed the layer that held the sound, but you want the sound, then do not remove that layer... just remove the objects that inhabit it on the stage if there are any. If you modifed your only copy of the file you purchased, then you need to get another one and always retain an original copy so that when you do things you don't want to do you have a fresh copy to try again with. Saving copies at different stages of success might be helpful for you as well so that you do not have to start from scratch every time you do something you regret.

Thank you.  No fortunately I created new .fla and.swf as well as  copying

the original .txt file.  A big question is how do I deactivate a  portion if

the text rather than erasing it. ??? does not work, /* does not  work.  I

wish I knew how I could do it.  Thanks again for all your  help.

PS I have been doing pages for nearly 20 years first in HTML using Kedit

and now with Dreamweaver.  I have used Flash for several years but this is

the first time i realize, thanks to you, that the .swf is driven by that .txt

                  file.
