Issues with cross-references spanning documents in a book

I hope I'm not covering old ground but I searched the forums and didn't see anything quite addressing my issue. I using InDesign 5.5 doing equipment manuals. When I create cross-references that span chapters, for example, a reference in Chapter 2 to a procedure in Chapter 4, work becomes very erratic and often slows to a crawl. It is like the software is trying to update all cross-links after every key stroke. I've now broken all likes between documents in a book but am keeping the cross-references with an individual chapters as they cause no issues. But being to use cross-references across chapters would be a nice enhancement. Any ideas what may be happening? Running Windows 7 with an Inten 5 and 4 gig of memory. Network can be flaky.
