I have the impression that the problem you describe is a Win 7 bug, as I have observed the same behaviour with other non-Adobe programs.
Definitely not, it only started with Adobe Reader X and it does not happen with any other program.
I have never had Reader, and I get the same warning with, specially, MS Word and Excel.
Having same issue that only started recently.
Every pdf i open and then when closing shows same message.
Using Vista Business and Reader 10.1.1
Sometime windows says "There is a solution. Download update", but i already have latest version
Yes it started from the moment I dowloaded Reader 10.1.1
Got a hint at the possible solution on the support forum of the anti-virus program. Reader 10.1.1 has a feature called "Enable Protect Mode at Startup" adn it seems it can create compatibility problems with anti-virus programs installed.
I was told to uncheck that (under edit then preferences) and it seems to have solved the problem.
This worked for me on Win7 Pro 64bit:
Open Adobe Reader X (10.1.1)
Edit... Preferences... General...
Uncheck "Enable protected mode at startup"
Close and Restart.
I'm using Symantec AV, I can easily believe it's an irritating incompatibility between what Adobe's trying to do and what Symantec is trying to do.
As I said on my previous post it is working for me too, no more error messages.
I am using McAfee Internet Security
All good here seems to work by unticking "Protected mode" option
We are using Mcafee SAAS
Checked Mcafee forums and seems to have been an issue for over a year with Mcafee products
but has not started affecting me until recently??
Re: Adobe Reader X Protected Mode Not Compatible with VSE 8.7?
I just installed AdobeX and everytime I open a document or just the application it closes as soon as I click on anything on the tool bar....I turned off my virus protection but it still does it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. I cannot even go to the preferences to turn off "protected mode" - any idea for a solution
I have been having this problem recently (Vista HP fully updated 32 bit) with Reader X. This was a clean install and no 3rd party reg cleaners etc have ever been used. I use Microsoft Security Essentials.
This problem seems intermitent. Yesterday it happened nearly every time I closed a pdf. Today it hasn't done it once so far. When the problem first happened a week or so back I tried the solutions offered (turn off protected mode) and it did not work. I tried "repair Adobe install" and that too did nothing. Windows problem reports keep saying Adobe updates available... they are not.
Apart from the message saying that it crashed on closing there is no outward sign of anything amiss. I did however open task manager while the error box was still displayed and it showed two Adobe processes as still running. When I used the error box option to "close program" these processes ended.
I can't help but feel these problems coincided with a recent round of updates although that may of course, be just that, a coincidence.
I found this Adobe document that describes a similar problem but no fix for the issue,
My previous posting mentioned two processes continued running in task manager.
In Win7/IE9 I found this prevented the "Adobe reader has stopped working" message whether opening a PDF locally or from a website:
- Open Manage add-ons
- Make sure the Adobe PDF Link Helper is NOT disabled
