Folio builder panel wont open layout

    Steve Kelly Community Member

I have been working on a Folio. When I sat down to work on my folio, I was instructed by indesign to update my Folio producer tools, which I did.

Since then I can no longer view any article layout from that folio in indesign. Indeed any folio that I create that does not reside on my desktop give the same problem. I can import articles, add articles and they all upload to the proper place at adobe and I can view them. But I simply cannot open them up through folio builder as I previously.

The exact error message is as below:

      ----

An error has occurred opening the source file for the article layout.

The InDesign file for the layout cannot be found.

      Screen shot 2011-11-14 at 13.25.13.png

      ----

Another strange thing that seems to be happening is that the folio will randomly reoder the articles in the folio.

I have dumped my indesign prefs, tried creating an entirely new project, made a new account and even reinstalled the entire software.

But the problem of opening an article that I have imported or added to a folio, simply not being found to open has got me stumped. I can't proceed with a major project until I can sort this out.

      Can anyone help.

      Many thanks

      Steve

The problem initially seemed very similar to the one linked below, but I dont get the content generation error

          Steve,

This happens when the InDesign file has been moved from the original path where it was located when it was imported to Folio Builder. If this happens, and you need to update the content, you can delete the articles from Folio Builder, and re-import them.

If you work with multiple designers, it's probably best-practice to keep the files on a network share.

Are you sure you haven't changed the path whether these files are located? You should be able to hover over the file in folio builder to get the path where it "thinks" the indesign file should be at, then compare to where it is actually located at.

            Hi Casey,

That is my main concern, I moved nothing. The only thing that has changed is that I had a message pop up that folio builder needed an update (which I did, as I couldn't do any more work in it until I had done this).

Once I had completed this, I couldn't load any of the files through the builder that I had previously worked on.

I have just checked the path as per your instructions, and that is totally fine.Screen shot 2011-11-14 at 16.10.46.png

I have created a test project using new fresh files/folios and articles and still get the same.

There are two things that make this even stranger.

            1. Everything works fine if I work on a folio that has all files in a folder on my desktop. If I work at any other level of sub folder it doesn't.

            and:

            2. The folio will randomly reorder the articles within it. If I put them back where I want them, a few hours or updates later folio builder will re-organise them.

            Totally weird

Do your folios have a large number of articles? There is a re-ordering bug that has been around for a long time that causes pages to jump drastically out of order, but I thought this was only when files were actually being re-ordered, IIRC.

Unfortunately, I couldn't replicate your experience. Our paths (after the update) still work/open the appropriate InDesign files at their destinations as they should. I tried a local path (desktop), and a network path.

I'm also curious to know if there was ever a sidecar.xml file used in the ordering of your articles and if you saw this behavior prior to the panel update.

                Thanks,

                Erin

Yes my folio typically has about 30 articles in it, I was unaware of the bug, but at least I can strike that one off as something I can't do anything about.

I wonder if there any prefs or things I need to dump/reset apart from the standard indesign prefs that could be causing this. It's most bizarre.

I have EXACTLY the same problem since the latest update to the Folio Builder panel!

Nothing is moved, it is still there, same folder, same name. But I can NOT update and get the same message.

Even worse: I deleted the page from the article, then wanted to add it again... SAME MESSAGE?

                    Something is broken it seems...

I'm getting same, but it seems intermittent.  I can "import" an article instead of adding it, but then when I go to update it or add a second orientation, I get

"An error has occurred opening the source file for the article layout.  The InDesign file for the layout cannot be found."  Deleted the article, then went to Add, and it worked for both orientations.  Double click the thumbnail to open the file, and it throws the error.

So far I can't find a way round it.  My production has ground to a halt - I'm left with creating the InDesign files and will have to hold on to them till I find a fix..  :-/

Yep, the only way around this i can find is to work entirely off the desktop.

                        Totally infuriating

Send me a PM and I'll get you a link to a folio builder panel that should fix this problem.

I'm having the same problem here. The only solution I had, was to delete the articles and reimport them. But Adobe Viewer wants to redownload the whole folio then.. Is there going to be an update for this problem, soon?

                            Thanks,

                            Pete

Same thing was happening to me.
The solution I found was to rename the directory in which the files were in. The problem was that I was using spaces and accents so the Folio Builder wasn't recognizing them as regular characters neither able to find the location of the files.

I turned the folder "05 Execução" into "05_Execucao" and all those errors were gone!

Had this exact same error, I then googled it and found this thread.

I was able to overcome it by moving my working folder onto the desktop or into 'Documents'

It was not happy working directly off the HD.

So work from work from 'Documents' or Desktop rather than from your Macs 'HD'
