CBR  - VBR for encoding H.264 for Blu-ray disk

    chande a k Community Member

I intend to purchase Matrox Compressed HD card for encoding H.264 from my HD Video footage  for making Blu-ray disk.

I understand that Matrox Compressed HD card   have only CBR option

VBR option is not available...Now I want to know How this will effect me in creating a Blu-ray disk.., what will be quality loss or what I will loose

2nd If I capture my HD Video footage through Firewire instead of HDMI will there be any quality loss.?

He's asking because I suggested he check out the premiere forums for users having issues with Matrox.

Chande, I meant to find threads discussing issues with the Matrox. It is also okay to ask; perhaps users who know the Matrox and your question will respond.

Twice,  yes  but not in the same forum  ( Encore  and Premiere ) and have further query regarding capturing HD Video for editing  -  through Fire wire / HDMI

I did not find any specific Matrox related question.

hiya... when you say "capture" you mean cable from camera and live capture from camera to HD thru firewire or hdmi ?  you have firewire on camera as well as hdmi ..is what you are asking? the manual might tell you something about that ( for camera ).. but on pro cameras shooting ( for example ) log c 4:2:2... you can capture on high end recorders via HD SDI ( one cable for 422 and two cables for 444 )... I dont capture anything but think that hdmi vs firewire800 ?  capture would depend on bitrate ( camera ) and capture card capability and HD speed etc ..and non pro cameras probably are within limits of both connections and cards for that.. I mean, it either can do it or it cant do it , it wont be a matter of the info changing to accomodate the connection... it either works or it doesnt... IMO.. ???

in essence if you are monitoring the stuff live from camera via HD SDI you can capture that on a recorder..but its pretty high end equipment and very expensive... is that what you're using ? no... so you have firewire and hdmi from camera, you monitor it live and want to capture it at same time...and thats what youre asking ??

just to get what you mean is why I'm asking.

the constant bit rate takes longer than variable bit rate only cause it changes  when frames being "compressed" are similar ( not much difference in each frame )..It's basically a function of the GOP complexity -- and dont lose much quality and vice-a-versa... I think that card is using the cuda stuff ( gpu and mem on card as well as cpu ) to do that and my only thought re: speed of the whole process might be your front side bus speed ( FSB ) and ram speeds....to really finally figure out where a bottleneck might be.

So to answer your question.. I have no clue !  give more info re: the above and at least others will have more info re: what you want to do etc.... oddly enough "capture" for me has only been from tape via firewire and so I dont know really if you mean live or from tape...but capture on pro film sets is in fact done with pretty expensive recorders through HD SDI etc.

ps.. edit.. I think the sony recorder used to record genesis panavision camera stuff via HD SDI is $75,000 ... but thats a separate unit...not a "graphic card "....

Thank you for your elaborate reply to my query..I use Sony HD Video camera for my recording what I wanted to know is if I download my HD Video to my PC through Firewire since this is the option available   with my old pinnacle video capture card for editing and than encoding H.264 with Matrox Compressed HD card and prepare Blu-Ray disk..

I don't have HDMI I/O, will it be OK to download HD Video to PC through firewire.? or I have to purchase another card with HDMI I/O option

Matrox compressed HD card has only CBR option available.. so what is the best option for encoding H.264 CBR or VBR

What camera, exactly, are you using? It's hard to give advice without specific information like that.

It appears that I have not explained properly..

Now As far as recording in HD footage is concerned  I have no problem With my Sony HD Camera.. For Editing my HD Footage I have to download or say capture/ Transfer  my HD Video footage to my PC

I have old Pinnacle capture Card in my PC which has a provision of firewire and not HDMI.  As such I have no problem in CAPTURING / DOWNLOADING /TRANSFERING MY VIDEO FOOTAGE to my PC through FIREWIRE...    I wanted to know if I download my Video footage to my PC through Firewire instead of HDMI, will I be compromising with any quality..

As regards CBR - VBR matter is now clear to me

I have SONY HDR-FX7 Camera... Generally I do my recording in SD footage - after editing in Premiere CS4  I make  DVD in Encore there is no problem in my this workflow

But for Blu-ray..  I do my recording in HD Video with my above Sony HDR-FX7 camera--   for Video editing in Premiere CS 4 I use my old pinnacle card which has only Firewire INPUT for capturing Video from my Camera... so far I have no problem in doing this...  Since my Video capture card in my PC has no HDMI I/O...  I am doing this through FIREWIRE.  Now I want to know whether there will be quality loss if I capture through FIREWIRE... If Yes,  then I must have to replace this card with another with HDMI I/O.

As regards my query about Matrox compressed HD card for encoding H.264  I have got the reply...   Thank you all for extending helping hand

That camera records high-definition video in the HDV format. That can be captured over FireWire into Premiere Pro. There is no need for an HDMI connection for capturing HDV.

The only way to capture footage of the fx7 is firewire. There is no other option. It does not make any difference what make the firewirecard is.
