                It's a graphics library that can be compiled into PHP.

                Look here -

                http://66.165.96.216/getimagesize.php

                The first image is placed on the page using this line -

                <?php
                list($width, $height, $type, $attr) = getimagesize("images/madison4bb.jpg");
                echo "<img src=\"images/madison4bb.jpg\" $attr alt=\"getimagesize()
                example\" />";
                ?>

                What happens is that GD is called with that image's name to determine it's
                dimensions. The echo writes the image tag to the page along with its
                determined dimensions. Why is this useful? It means I can use a pop-up
                window sized *exactly* to fit a variety of differently sized images, as
                their names are pulled from a database. I would use that on this page -

                http://66.165.96.216/m_projects.php

                to make the images contained in each project descripting a link to open a
                page showing an enlargement of that image.

                The "button" is written dynamically with this -

                <a href="javascript:;"><img src="/button.php?button=Click+Here" /></a>

                The file "button.php" contains a function that causes GD to create a GIF
                image containing those words "Click Here", and it's then displayed on the
                page.

                The bottom image is dynamically resized from the top image, using these
                lines -

                <?php
                // File and new size
                Resize('images/','madison4bbcopy.jpg','images/','madison4bbthumb.jpg','220','50','100')
                ?>
                <img src="/images/madison4bbthumb.jpg" />

                The PHP calls GD to resize the 4bbcopy image to a NEW image called
                'madison4bbthumb.jpg' with a size of 220x50px. The second line drops this
                newly created image on the page.

                Pretty slick.
