    Bridge running realllllllly sloooooow

    SF Ellen Community Member

I'm on a Mac osx running 10.5, and using Photoshop CS5. When I access Bridge (4.0.5) from photoshop, it loads realllly reallly slowllllly. I have changed 'Always High Qaulity' to 'Prefer Embedded', with little to no change in the speed.

Is there anything else that could be slowing me down?

      Thanks!

The most common reason for slowing down is lack of disk space (you must have at least 10 % free disk space left on your start up disk, this is common for all purposes) and not enough RAM installed.

Depending on your processor and computer it might be wise to put as many as possible RAM (memory) in your computer. RAM is relatively cheap these days and when you have now say 2 GB RAM installed you surely will benefit in speed adding 2 or 4 GB Ram to your system.

Bridge is a very processor demanding application when caching the files the first time. It also depends on the size of files you want to preview, obvious, the bigger amount and size of files the longer it will take to cache preview.

But in general, on a good system with enough RAM and free space left Bridge should not give problems with caching HQ previews unless a little time.

Thanks! I checked my hard drive, and I have plenty of space (428 GB Available out of 639.75) but I found a helpful tip elsewhere on the forum. It said to:

            1. Empty my cache (HD>library> cache and User>library>cache) I dragged the contents of both cache folders to the trash. The I restarted my computer and emptied the trash.

            2. I launched bridge with the 'option' key pressed, and chose 'refresh preferences', then I went into preferances and checked 'create monitor sized previews' (in the advanced tab'

Now, Bridge is zipping along just fine.

            Phew!!!

Well... Perhaps FAST depends on the ability to perceive fastness.

I have a Mac Pro Nehalem with 16 Processors.

4TB of RAID0 storage enought to play fullRes Cineon files in FullHD

              32GBRAM

Bridge is NOT using Multi Processing

Bridge is the slowest application to ever run on a Mac

Bridge is a slap in the face to folks trying to playback video

Bridge is a slap in the face!

Bridge and Adobe Help are both unlike the rest of suite. Programmed differently somehow. Totally UNLIKE adobe. Not on par at all with adobe standards.

So - I have enoughth of everything RAM, HD, Processors. Bridge is still the MOST dreaded app in the bizz !

Don't have enough experience with video but in general I can view my movie files although you have to keep in mind it is more like a browser and normally gives you the ability to view the content in some way, its not a fully equipped movie player nor is it meant to be so.

Bridge is a slap in the face!

                Not true and not helpful

I agree that Bridge is slowly developing and certainly can use a bunch of extra features and improvements and Adobe Help is not the best effort and surely needs a lot of improvement. Nevertheless I can use both without to many problems.

But we don't know what version of Bridge you are using, if you have the latest updates for this and also Bridge can work on external disks but working with RAID and over a network is not what Bridge is designed for.

Also Bridge needs time to build the cache, If you have set cache to your start up disk and the files on external sources it needs extra time to find the correct cache and if you use export cache to folder it needs a bit time to read those cache files when opening that folder in the content window.

I don't think Bridge uses its own code to run video.  Believe that is done by Apple Quicktime, at least that is what I remember reading some time ago.

Actually, yes.  The slap in the face comes when one complains and one is told that Bridge is free so one gets what one pays for.
