Place a text frame near each image, and thread the text frames together. Set the text attributes to be a numbered list, and enter either a paragraph return or a next frame character, and a sequential number will be generated for each. Alternatively, use a string of actual numbers. It won't work to use page numbers because a page can have only one number that way.
Thank you, I am closer to the solution after following your instructions. On the Master pages (Two page spread), I made a text frame adjacent to each of two frames for the images (There will be two images on each document page, thus two frames on each Master Page). They are threaded together and I verified this by View > Show Text Threads.
Since I am not getting the right result, I must have done something wrong. I made numbered List using Paragrach Styles. I could not find "text attribubutes" so I am probably not doing this right. Please note that I have spent 7 hours on this so far, so I am making an effort.
It seems reasonable that this should be done on a Master layout, is this right? So far, the text frame number flow from 1 to 4 across the the Master Page spread. Thus the first two pages are correct. However, when page is added based on the Master it repeats the same flow: 1 though 4. I expect this because that's what the Master shows, However, I want the numbers to continue as I add photos to additional pages.
Thank you for any additional information you are willing to provide.

I think Michael's instructions aren't quite right or he has misunderstood your requirements. It would help to see a screenshot.
Sounds like your master page is set up correctly.
Then, go to the document pages and do not override the master frames. (if you already did, select them and go to Pages (Panel Menu) > Remove Selected Local Overrides. Then, create a text file with sequential numbers, one to a line. File > Place, hold down shift, and you will get a special autoflow cursor in parens when your cursor is over the master page text frame (that is not overriden). Place.
The continuous numbers will flow into all textframes in the document. Delete excess pages.
Alternatively, you can make a file of blank lines and turn on autonumbering in the paragraph style applied to those thread frames. Note that the master page text frame must be empty in order for autoflow to work.
Thank you. My InDesign won't place text. I can place images, and I have placed text in the past, but today it does not place text. I opened a new document to try to determine what the problem is; still the same. What is going on here? I
Did this and still can't place text. I got the message that asked if I wanted to delete preferences, but still the same.
What does "can't" mean? Do you get an error? Can you select the text file
from the Place dialog? Do you get the cursor (place gun)? Can you click?
What actually happens?
I'm using CS4 and MS Word 2010 on a Windows 7 computer. I wonder if there is a conflict. I am able to load images and pdf files but not MS Word documents.
File > Place
The Place dialog box opens to the last one used, normal ops.
I select an MS Word document and click "Open"
The cursor does not load. There is no text associated with the cursor.
When I click, nothing happens.
I restarted the computer, but that didn't help.
Sorry, when I say a text file that is not a Word document.
I mean a PLAIN TEXT file, such as produced by Notepad, and ending in
the .TXT file extension.
(That said, Word should work, but...let's avoid the complexity.)
Doe this happen in new files too, or just this one? Create a brand new user account and see if it works there.
The same thing happens with a new Word document.
I also tried a new InDesign document; same issue.
I also did the reload preferences, again. Issue remains.
As a work-around, I'll try to use a pdf file.

A PDF file won't work. Why won't you use a TEXT FILE like I ask?
You cannot autoflow text from a PDF file.
I"m sorry, John, I misundertood your post. I will try this.
Success! This worked!
It will take some time to type all the numbers and I want the word Photo in the box, but at least this now works. Thank you! to everyone.
I made numbered List using Paragrach Styles. I could not find "text attribubutes" so I am probably not doing this right.
You understood what I was suggesting. My term text attributes just referred to the things you can set in a paragraph style, including numbered list. And I'm sorry that I didn't give more clear instructions on how and where to create the text frames. I thought that you would know how to do that, and if you didn't, you would ask in a follow-up.
