Animating a mouth has been a popular topic around here for more tan a decade. There are may different ways to do it and the one an artist selects is based on the project as much as the experience or capabilities of the animator. If you're interested in some guidance, tell us about your project.

As for what i am doing, i am creating a character based project where the characters face will only be captured face on and saying only 2 words. I am creating the character in a 3d environment and as the character is a crazy figure, morphing the mouth would be too hard so I thought maybe I could add the mouth on in after effects in post production. I have nearly completed the 3d model and it looks simalar to below but with out the mouth.

I'd use the puppet tool instead of trying to animate a mask. It's far easier. Just create a separate layer for the mouth, select the puppet tool, set 3 or 4 points, play back the audio and drag the points around to animate.
