I can only imagine that once they do release it, something should show up when you go into Flash Builder > Help > Search for Flash Builder Updates.
I see that Flash Builder 4.6 is out :
But when I go to Builder > Help > Search for Flash Builder Updates it tells me that my Flash Builder is up to date...
Maybe a little patience is required. Wonderful as the Adobe team is, I'm sure they don't have the ability to get everything ready simultaneously.
As wonderful as your reply is, I would like to see an official statement on why they say it is out when actually it is not.
Same for Flex SDK, links on their site is broken.
Well my reply is based on Adobe saying it's coming out today and that has been confirmed.
My sources are from the "official" Flex SDK site, and the "official" Adobe Flash Builder site:
-> broken link to the SDK
-> 4.6 is out but my Flash Builder finds no updates
I'm not pulling this out of my hat, Adobe says it is out "now", but obviously it isn't, they don't say "it will be out later" right?
If you have something more official, maybe you can share ?
No, I won't be sharing more. Adobe can't change everything at a push of a button.
Even if they cannot "change everything at a push of a button" they could start by putting SDK and FB out before telling the world it is out.
Imagine you receive a call "Mr, you car is repaired and ready!". You go there and find that you car is actually not ready, and he tells you : "Well, I cannot change everything at a push of a button, I call you, now you wait".
Can you tell me what is your reaction ?
Anyway, I don't mind waiting and I actually love Flex & Flash. That doesn't mean I will accept miscommunication, I'm not fanboy.
@ Granit_Xixit--Tried the link, nothing happens when clicking the button. Is this some kind of HTML5 technology? A cruel joke perpetrated by Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen?
Oh btw, speaking of non-functional web pages and CEOs, be sure to sign this petition:
uh-oh. I'm using Win7. I have FB 4.5.1 installed.
I downloaded the installer from the link above and tried installing, but the installer does not allow selecting any options to install. The two options both state that I have a pre-release version already installed. I do not. Says it will install 70MB of something and after that... no shortcut, program folder, nothing has changed. Flash Builder 4.6 does show up in the Windows uninstall list though. But I do not find the executable anywhere on my pc. I did get a very nice email after downloading welcoming me to the "Flash Builder 4.5 trial".
Anyone else have any luck (did I really just type the word 'luck' here) installing?
Does anyone have Shantanu Narayen's phone number? I'd like to call him and discuss these issues with someone who cares about us developers' Flash Builder experience. Oh wait...
I am only guessing here, but at least it's an educated guess. I'm betting you're going to need to uninstall 4.51 first - again, not positive - but we did in the prerelease program since the two didn't play well together. I actually ran 4.6 prerelease in a VM. So there's one datapoint but maybe an Adobe employee will confirm. Or, wow, might it be in the release notes? I bet it is. I'm still in the middle of downloading so I can't confirm that.
@otherDownloaders, If you're using Chrome and it's not downloading, try Firefox
Uninstall 4.5, then install 4.6 as a trial version.
Ouch that hurts. I lose all my settings & other Eclipse plugins. <sigh>
Ok, here we go....
Well. Uninstalling FB 4.5.1 and then installing FB 4.6 worked, BUT...
now I'm getting all kinds of errors in my existing projects which I've imported into 4.6. A sample:
1) In the mobile app's manifest, I had to add the following tag to the <android> section to remove an error:
2) All ArrayCollection.sort properties threw an error. I had to replace the import:
3) Cannot resolve attribute 'rotation' for component type mx.graphics.LinearGradien
4) Cannot resolve attribute 'stateGroups' for component type mx.states.State.
Aw, crap, the list goes on!
I just stopped here, as something basic is wrong.
Maybe a namespace changed, or did the new SDK really drop something major like the sort property on ArrayCollection?
So you can't export all your prefs and keep most of them upon reimport?
I would like to thank you for taking the step so that we can learn from the solutions you find over the next 5 days before I install ;-)
I don't see a way to export FB prefs.
It won't help missing plug-ins until they're reinstalled but for keyboard shortcuts etc, I export via File > Export > General > Preferences and keep the file in DropBox. Maybe it won't help for the preferences you want.
You're welcome. I enjoy being the recipient of Adobe's cutting-edge ever-crappy installers: no warnings, no help, no nothing. We go back to CS3, CS4 and all the joys of custom ACL's (Access Control Lists) and other such silent fail beauties having no explanations. I also enjoy digging into error logs for clues to the crime. The perfect masochist for Adobe's fiendish ways.
FB 4.6 installed nicely enough, but any FB 4.5 projects I import come in with dozens of errors now. So far I don't see any commonality. It just seems like 4.6 has a lot of compatibility issues with 4.5. Things like the LinearGradient's "rotation" property and methods like getStyleManager() are throwing errors now. This shouldn't happen with such a small upgrade point.
I had hoped to be testing a version 4.5 mobile project by now and enjoying the 50% performance improvement promised by Adobe. I'm still looking for Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen's phone number, but so far no luck there, either. Maybe I'm taking this too personal but I think he's avoiding me. He's probably hard at work on his top-secret Flash Builder to HTML5 convertor and just can't be bothered with issues with this ancient, legacy software. My bad for buying it I guess.
I did try that export but like you said it doesn't help with the plug-ins and such. Thanks
I think I'll install on a VM again. We all feel your pain. Installations have always been an issue when I try to upgrade Adobe products (with one version's exception). I've probably a half dozen phone calls to tech support over the years to have them give me a magic number to allow for something to overwrite something that will then do something but not what I was expecting.
On the other hand, I can't quit Adobe. They still have the best match for tools I need to get work done. It's just those weeks during a new installation where I have to make sure it's not in the middle of a crucial deadline.
Did you know?
Over the last month, Adobe's stock has dropped over 7%!
That's still lower than their drop in workforce, isn't it?
Fun Fact #1
Before starting work at Adobe, current Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen's formerly held various positions at Apple Inc.
Are all projects producing errors? What about a new project? Did the imported projects specify an SDK or “use default”? I just imported a half dozen projects without problem, although they probably don’t use some of the APIs you mentioned.
All 4.5 projects produce errors.
A new mobile project does not throw any errors.
Importing a project into 4.6 does not allow choosing an SDK. (File->Import->General->Existing projects into Workspace).
Thank you for looking at this.
For any project throwing errors, if you check its project properties is it set to 4.6 or referencing some older SDK? Does a clean and rebuild fix that project?
More error messages:
1137: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected no more than 0. (location unknown)
1044: Interface method activate in namespace mx.managers:ISystemManager not implemented by class _MyProject_mx_managers_SystemManager.
1044: Interface method addChildBridge in namespace mx.managers:ISystemManager not implemented by class _MyProject_mx_managers_SystemManager.

1044: Interface method addFocusManager in namespace mx.managers:ISystemManager not implemented by class _MyProject_mx_managers_SystemManager.
... and many more...
Project is using 4.6 SDK
Clean Project does not remove the errors.
This is affecting 10 projects, all built in FB 4.5
I'm happy to report that after installing, a complex AIR app I've been working on solely needed a namespace change from 3.0 to 3.1 and all ran great. I haven't tackled any browser-based projects yet.
These 1044 errors imply that some library somewhere is using older versions of the SDK. Maybe some environment or preferences variable isn’t pointing where it should? Or some other project property?
I'm tracking down the 1044 errors now and have it narrowed down to an ESRI ArcGIS (ver. 2.4) library.
Will post my results.
Flex 3.6 references causing errors
I have FB 4.6 working now after tracking down removing any references to SDK 3.6 -- the main culprit.
It would've been nice if the Flex compiler could have been more helpful in pinpointing where the errors were orginating. Tracking down hundreds of errors with no clue where they are coming from is no fun. Especially CSS errors (348 errors!).
ArcGIS compatibility issues
If it helps anyone else, in my case I'm using the ArcGIS API for Flex, version 2.4. The InfoSymbol was the bad boy. Apparently it references some older mx components. I found an updated InfoSymbol component with no old mx refs in it here:
serial number issues
Another weird thing when installing. My serial number (from CS 5.5, which included FB 4.5) would not work. I had to install as a trial. I expected to be prompted for the serial number when opening FB 4.6 but got no prompt. Maybe the software saw my CS5.5 installation and decided I was all good. But maybe the software will quit working when the 30 day trial is up and leave me stranded. Again, I'm left scratching my head with Adobe's apparent lack of thinking this through and leaving me to wonder if my software is going to be functional in 30 days.
I'm going to follow up with a new post re: any performance increases with FB 4.6. So far while debugging all the errors, I've noticed some improvement in frame rates with the List scrolling, and a bit more responsiveness when pushing views, but it has not been overwhelming. It has made things a little more tolerable. Pushing views is still very sluggish, but we'll see.
my fav ceo
Hey Shantanu Narayen, drop me a line and let's do lunch. I got some stuff to talk about with you!
Restart FlashBuilder. I think if you are in trial mode it will warn you how many days you have left.
I tried file->restart but do not see anything about number of days left.
Is it possible the software just picked up my valid serial number from my CS5.5 installation?
