Draw a window around the clips,ie., in the Project Window. and the Automate to Sequence ICON should light up and you can proceed & make sure it stays activated.. I usually darken the interface to black and the ICON is easily seen.
I have done that. I can ctrl-a, or draw a window. At the top of the project window
it puts up an icon asnd next to it says '9 items selected', but the 'automate to sequence'
stays greyed out.

Drag and drop the clips on the "new item" buttom at the bottom of the project window.
My automate to sequence is working. One thing is you have to be sure that selecting the clips is the last hing you do before choosing automate to sequence. Clicking on anything else, even if the clips are still selected in the project window seems to de-rail the process.
One think I have now found is that if I add a first item using the add item
button then subsequensly, if I select other clips, then automate to sequence comes on.
But not of there are no clips
Mine works with an empty sequence. There does, however, need to be a sequence open.
Start over again, new project. > If all else fails totally uninstall and reinstall with all up dates CS5 .5.2, and hope for the best ? When you click on a clip or clips in the Project Window, it may be better to display the clip Icons not specs ? The greyed out Automate Sequence icon should light up' ? The third from the left at bottom of Project Window ?
But, you can do it another way check out A Classroom in a BOOK CS5.5 Premiere Pro, but, if it is greyed out there could be a gremlin in the download if on trial , or a computer malfuhnction, but, it does work.
Same thing happened to me, easy fix in case you still need it, simply double click on the sequence 1 box that appears before your images on icon view, or at the top if you're in list view, that enables the timeline and automate to sequence option again.
I have Adobe CC 2015 and I STILL have this problem.
Drag a bunch of shi# onto the New Item icon is the ONLY way to make this feature work.
Well done Adobe, over FOUR years and still the same bugs.
I had the same problem with no answers anywhere...automate to sequence grayed out. I solved it. First, create a sequence and the automate to sequence button is no longer grayed out. Then it works as instructed.
