You certainly would not need a background program to monitor anything.
Just track the number of times the button was pushed or whatever in a
global and write the value of that global (the usage stats) to a file.
You can do that with the built-in getPref and setPref commands or with
an xtra like propsave or budFile

To track the number of times a button is pressed, add a global variable,
on mouseUp me
if voidP(gButton1Pressed) then gButton1Pressed=0
--whatever the button does, do it here
That will make a variable called gButton1Pressed which will always store
the current number of times the button was pressed. Then you can write
that value to a text file using setPref(). When the movie starts, you
can read in that value using getPref() and use that to keep a current tally.
Look up setPref() and getPref() in the help file for syntax and usage
