Are you using the Application Frame? If not, use it.
What do you use for font management, and are you using auto-activation? If the document you're opening has missing fonts that auto-activation can't locate, it may cause some buggy behavior. I'm not sure if that's what's going on in your case, but it might be something to look at.

Bob, I've turned the application frame on, but as with all change, I don't like it. I'll test it out for a while, but it feels like WIndows.
Meanwhile,the application still does the force to front, but docs do seem to open faster (?).
Mary, Interesting idea with the Font Management. I bet that's why the document isn't open when the app comes to the front. I'm using Suitcase Fusion 3 with auto activate on.
Any other ideas?
Just to see if auto-activation is the culprit, try turning it off and see if you still have the problem.
