    Chart problem...

    HSGROW_HK Community Member

I am new to Illustrator and would like some help please. I found this style of chart in an annual report and wanted to replicate the same style (ignoring the @21.2m in the centre) however, I can only see how to make awful looking greyscale pie charts. Can anyone help me with tips on 1) how to create this 'doughnut' style pie chart and 2) how to have the values and labels shown nicely on the outside like the below - as I will be importing the finished chart into InDesign.

      Many Thanks

Use the pie style chart then fill the center using the elipse tool with what ever color you like. To change the fill colors of the pie itself, expand its appearence then ungroup. Once that is done you can no longer using the spreadsheet to edit the values.

You definitely do NOT need to ungroup to recolour graphs.

Direct select works perfectly well on graphs.

Bear in mind though that grouping within graphs is sometimes complex, so if you have legends and stuff you may need to option-click to select whole groups within the graph.

But a simple chart like this should present no problems.

So that helps, how do I create the labels & values in that circular style and align nicely with the individual wedge, as shown in the picture?

                Probably manually.

Won't happen automatically. Setting the option for Legends In Wedges will cause the text objects to appear in the wedges, and you can directSelect them (white pointer) to move them to where you want them. But they will snap back to inside the wedges if you update the data. Also, they will display only text values from your first-row of data, not numerical values. You can't make the pie graph auto-display text objects containing both the values and the titles as in your example.
