Jacob Bugge Dec 28, 2011 2:51 PM (in response to jksf13k)jksf,
You may:
1) Create a single path as a spine of the final thick line,
2) Set the Stroke Weight to the total width,
3) Object>Path>Outline Stroke (this will give you an unstroked path with the shape of the arrow without the arrowhead),
4) Add a stroke,
5) Add the arrowhead and the stars.

jksf13k Dec 29, 2011 3:32 PM (in response to Grant H)Hi,
Thanks Grant H and Jacob Bugge for your help. With a change of plans, I actually went and did a new design drawing using the line tool along with a chosen font, but I'm having trouble on a few things:
1. With filing in colors on the white space of both signs which I tried by selecting a blank object space, fill, and color swatch but nothing happens, only works on the font?? Did I miss something?
2. I tried to round the corners on the very top left of the large sign and bottom right by using effect, stylize, round corner but wasn't sure with the size so I entered a number but nothing happens?
Was I supposed to create a new layer first?
3, I want to add yellow lights on both signs with the large one going in a pattern (one light ahead of the other) throughout the arrow along with the small sign going all around. Is there a way to add the yllow circles automattically to go around evenly or do I just have carefully apply it manually? I can sure use some help on this? Thabjs!

5. Re: How to draw a thick, curved lined arrow in CS5?
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 30, 2011 5:04 AM (in response to jksf13k)LOL!
You don't have any corners to round you used the line tool each line is a separtate path.
You would be better using the pen tool so as to be able to make closed paths, but you can select all the lines holding the shift key while selecting and then do a Command J (Mac) or Control J (PC)
You will still have two end points that will not join which you will have to select those endpoints and do another join command.
However withthis art you might find some unpredictable joining. If so do recreate it with the pen tool. Read abou the pen tool.
Or you can use the rectangle tool or round corner rectangle tool in combination with the pathfinder tool. Read about the shape tools and the path finder in the help files.
This was done with the pen tool and then I applied the round corner effect

jksf13k Dec 30, 2011 1:47 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Hi Wade_Zimmerman,
Oh! Guess that's why I'm just a novice at all this! Can I apply your steps to the same drawing, use the shift key to select all lines, then with the pen tool command J to join? How will I know if the lines are joined?
I actually was able to follow your steps but had a hard time joining all the lines since I did it one by one and also rounding the corners with both rectangle tools cause I'm not sure about the WxH inches and it showed circles around them? Thanks for showing me your drawing but is it possible to only round the top left and bottom right corner of the whole sign or only from your drawing?
I also tried the fill tool to add color to the area where the text is but it colored over it halfway? Thanks!

jksf13k Dec 31, 2011 1:29 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Hi Wade,
Thanks so much for taking the time to do a demo and showing me your technique which I appeciate. It makes things a lot easier for me to watch and practice if I forget. I'm still curious if it's still possible to only round the top left corner and bottom right corner? I hope it's not too much to ask. Thanks!

Jacob Bugge Dec 31, 2011 2:15 PM (in response to jksf13k)jksf,
To round only some corners, you may use the free Round Any Corner script available here (just create a circle with the desired (rounding) radius and select that along with Direct Selecting the corner Anchor Points to replace by rounded segments):
http://park12.wakwak.com/~shp/lc/et/en_aics_script.html
I am not sure it is possible in Illy, even in the newest version.

12. Re: How to draw a thick, curved lined arrow in CS5?
jksf13k Jan 1, 2012 8:42 PM (in response to jksf13k)Hi,
I have another drawing where this one focuses on the overall theme. Still in progress, the font will go somewhere in-between the moon and planet, and will add more stars, etc.
With the star seen on the mid-left, I used the line tool, criss-crossed at angles, then filled in with the brush. I tried driawng it with the pen tool but it got all crooked. Is there a better way to draw the same star using the pen tool or another tool?
Also, the planet on the right is supposed to be Saturn, but I can sure use some help on how to draw the ring in an angle? Thanks!

13. Re: How to draw a thick, curved lined arrow in CS5?
Wade_Zimmerman Jan 1, 2012 9:55 PM (in response to jksf13k)The Star tool
Read about it in thehelp files
You seelect he star tool (under the rectangle tool) then click it in the document and the dialog will appear
like such
You enter the number of points and the two radii
then in this case you use the direct select tool and drag the points you want longer and then rotate it and you get this
Takes about three minutes a faster AI user which I am not can do it under a minute.
You then drag the star into the symbol panel and then you can place as many as you want in your artork and reuse it in other documents.
Read about symbols as well.
Go out and Purchase a book like Real World Illustrator and you will see you will catch one.

14. Re: How to draw a thick, curved lined arrow in CS5?
Jacob Bugge Jan 2, 2012 2:13 AM (in response to jksf13k)You are welcome, jksf. I hope we shall see/hear your findings.
Concerning the star(s), you may also use the Pathfinder>Unite/Add to shape area/whatever to get one star by combining several star shapes.
Concerning the disc/ring, if you want the rings stroked, you may, with the same centre as the planet (which you may lock):
1) Create a fill/stroke ellipse with shape and size corresponding to the outer rim of the outer part on top of the planet, colour as desired;
2) Copy 1) in front of itself and change the size to the size corresponding to the inner rim of the outer part,
3) Copy 2) in front of itself and change the size to the size corresponding to the outer rim of the inner part,
4) Copy 3) in front of itself and change the size to the size corresponding to the inner rim of the inner part,
5) Select 1) and 2) and Object>Compound Path>Make,
6) Select 3) and 4) and Object>Compound Path>Make,
7) With the Scissors Tool, cut all Anchor Points along the long axis (axes), Smart Guides are your friends;
8) Object>Compound Path>Release both cut compound paths,
9) Object>Compound Path>Make each set of half ellipses belonging together (now you will have four half ellipses),
10) In the Appearanace palette/panel move the two half ellipses down below the planet.
It may be done in a simpler way if you want the rings without strokes at the rims.
And then you will have to colour the planet, but I presume you have no doubt about that.
now you should have the two full parts of the ring in front of the planet, then you may:
7) With the Direct Scissors Tool cut all the side Anchor Points (along the axis of greatest size),

jksf13k Jan 3, 2012 8:01 PM (in response to jksf13k)Okay cool! Thanks a lot for the great advice and tips Wade and Jacob! BTW, how do you get "px" in the Star Tool since it only shows inches on mine? =)

Jacob Bugge Jan 4, 2012 1:53 AM (in response to jksf13k)For my part you are welcome, jksf.

Edit>Preferences>Units & Undo> set as desired: this is a general setting.
Or File>Document Setup> set as desired: this is a document specific setting.
For a new document you can change/set the units from the start where you name it and so on.
