able123 Jan 2, 2012 12:19 PM (in response to Michael Stehly)theres a thread here someplace re: using virtualDub to split avi and audio using direct streaming.. and you can google for the tuturial that thread was sorta based on.. something like " how to split avi files using virtualdub" ought to get you the tutorial or some info... basically after you load your file ( avi ) into virtualdub theres a timeline and certain controls ( home, end, etc ) to select what part of video you wanna split..
direct streaming does nothing to the original avi file basically just splits and you rename the file when you " save as AVI " ...
I dont know what smart rendering is.. never used it.. but virtualdub has a choice for that..
as far as I know it only works on avi files...

Then you probably didn't look hard enough. The feature may not always be called that, or even listed at all. You may have to do quite a bit of digging around to find out what each program is actually capable of.

Michael Stehly Jan 3, 2012 2:18 PM (in response to Jim Simon)I looked carefully at videohelp.com/tools. The only program that I found that can do Smart Rendering is Virtual Dub. It works with avi and MPEG 1. I need a program that does Smart Rending with MPEG 2.

Jeff Bellune Jan 3, 2012 3:16 PM (in response to Michael Stehly)I found a program that does Smart Rendering(VideoReDo Plus). Unfortunately, the video and audio cannot be split.
That's not correct. Under General Parameters you can choose Elementary Streams for the Default File Save Format. See page 36 of the .pdf help file.
