digiday Jan 3, 2012 12:13 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Thanks Monika,
Some of my old Illustrator memories of techniques from ten years ago are coming back to me now... I used to have an Illustrator manual PDF, but I haven't found it yet.
But now when I try to make an art brush from my triangle/trapezoid, it get the message, "The selected artwork contains an element that cannot be used as an art brush."
See the image below.
Maybe I just need to re-create my color waves in Illustrator to be able to use them as an art brush.
Working on it.
Thanks,
digi

3. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
Monika Gause Jan 3, 2012 12:35 PM (in response to digiday)You can only use paths in an art brush, no pixels, no clipping mask.
So you need to re-create this in Illustrator. Should be fairly simple to create those wavy lines. Color them, use the pathfinder to create the triangle. Then you can create the art brush.
This here shows a slightly more complex procedure, because there's a gradient in it: http://www.vektorgarten.de/illustrator-flattening-transparency.html
For the wavy lines you can use the zigzag-effect (or the filter)

4. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 12:49 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Hi Monika,
I was just writing back because that's what I figured. But my wavy line paths were very labor intensive when I created them in Photoshop so I was trying to copy and paste or import those in to Illustrator, but with no success.
Years ago I was able to transfer paths created in Illustrator to Photoshop, but I don't remember ever doing the opposite.
When I try to copy those complex, perfect sine-wave paths from Photoshop, I eventually get the message, "Could not export to clipboard because rectangle is empty." But actually I'm trying to copy the paths from a TIFF with a background layer made of the color waves, so I'm not sure about that message's accuracy... and anyway I'm trying to copy the paths, not the background layer. I right-click on the path and select-copy, but it doesn't copy back in to Illustrator.
I've also tried "placing"/importing the sine-wave path, but it only places the background layer from the Photoshop TIFF.
I've also tried simply dragging and dropping the path from Photoshop to Illustrator, but no go.
Is there a way to import my sine-wave path from Photoshop to Illustrator?
Thanks again,
digi

digiday Jan 3, 2012 12:55 PM (in response to digiday)Hi again,
Nevermind... I finally got the sine-wave paths to copy over to Illustrator... not sure what was going wrong before, but it worked now.
Thanks again,

6. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
Monika Gause Jan 3, 2012 12:57 PM (in response to digiday)WHat you could try is to create shape layers in Photoshop. Then save this as a PSD and place in Illustrator. You have version 10 and I don't know if it is capable of doing this, but when embedding the PSD, Illustrator should ask you what to do with the PSD. Check: Convert Photoshop layers to objects.
When using the zigzag-effect (or filter), creating these waves should be much easier than doing the same in Photoshop, which doesn't have this kind of filter for vector paths. You only need one of these lines, then copy it a few times.

digiday Jan 3, 2012 1:01 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Thanks Monika... please see my last post... I was finally able to copy and paste the sine-wave paths in to my Illustrator file.
Thanks again,

8. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 1:21 PM (in response to digiday)Okay, I'm reproducing my color sine-waves. But I can't sample the colors from the imported bitmap layer with the eyedropper... I guess.
So I'm taking the RGB figures from each color in Photoshop and making a new swatch in Illustrator... is there a quicker way to do this?... probably not, eh?
Thanks again,
digi

9. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
Monika Gause Jan 3, 2012 1:46 PM (in response to digiday)Not in Illy 10 maybe. In newer version you could export the swatches from Photoshop and then import in Illy. But the eyedropper should be able to work. Did you press the shift key when sampling the colors?

10. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 2:02 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Hi Monika,
I'm using Illy 9. And I hadn't tried Shift+Eyedropper... now I see that works... but too late... already manually created the 14 color swatches by writing down all the RGB figures and creating new swatches in Illustrator.
But now I have my newly created sine-wave color stripes and I'm trying to intersect those colors and paths with my trapizoid path to make it just a trapizoid filled with the color waves, but I'm not having any success with Object>Join, Average, Slice.
What am I forgetting?
Thanks,
digi

11. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 2:21 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Okay, I finally got it to slice by putting the trapizoid path above the wave paths and colors. But now when I select "New Brush", I don't have "Art Brush" available... it is grayed out.
All my colors waves are on separate sub-layers in one main layer... do they need to be flattened?
Still working on it.
Thanks,
digi

digiday Jan 3, 2012 2:26 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Thanks I have that now... see my last post. But now I'm trying to make a new art brush from it.

14. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
Monika Gause Jan 3, 2012 2:34 PM (in response to digiday)You need to select the whole graphic when creating the new brush. Then art brush should be available.

15. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 2:41 PM (in response to digiday)That did it!
Thanks so much again.
Sorry I don't have any more helpful answer points to award.
Let me know if there's anything I can do for you.
This is trivial and off topic, but do you know why my avatar icon doens't show up?... I've seen others with only one red square like me who's avatar icon shows up... maybe those people had more than ZERO points, but still only one red square.
Thanks!

16. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
Monika Gause Jan 3, 2012 2:57 PM (in response to digiday)You're welcome.
The avatar images need to be approved by someone in charge. So maybe that's the cause. The process could take some time.

17. Re: Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
digiday Jan 3, 2012 3:10 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Monika,
Below is a little sample of the rainbow spiral... in one form anyway.
Also, my avatar image was approved immediately when I plugged it in last week and it shows up on my profile page... just not on the forum. That's the way it was before when I had another one before Adobe reset the forum's data and it disappeared all together... it would show up on the profile page but never on the forum itself.
I guess Adobe has been working allot of bugs out of the forum software and this is just one they haven't fixed.
Anyway, THANKS!
digi
