Does google treat pdf pages as duplicate content

I know google should be able to distinguish between standard web pages and printable pdfs but using the joomla opensource system i've had a few problems (ongoing) with duplicate content.

Do any of the experts know if google definitely doesn't penalise for duplicate content in pdfs or is it best to just err on the side of caution and remove this functionality? Most pdfs are on educational sites so it's not an issue for them, but it would be on mine. Example here http://www.brightermedia.co.uk/web-copywriter/seo-copywriting-services.pdf - the content output is identical to the html page.

Planning to write some detailed guides so it would be really useful to keep this but don't want to end up getting penalised by google. thanks in advance.
