In the prefs under Clipbaord Handling... uncheck Prefer PDF when pasting and I think the swatch will come in with the pasted gradient.
I did have this unchecked and also AICB, Preserve Appearance and Overprints set in Illustrator as per the docs.
Copy/Paste and this is how it looks in the layers panel. Each square represents a stop on the gradient.
Once in ID there is nothing at all I can do with the gradient but all the docs tell me I can use it in ID but so far I have not been able to
When you say InDesign 5.5 I presume you really mean CS5.5, which is version 7.5. There never was a version 5.5, CS3 stopped at 5.0.4 In any case, are you patched to 7.5.2?
Can you show me a screen shot of the gradient object onthe page, and of the swatches panel?
If there was transparency in the gradient it will not carry over from InDesign as far as I know. Maybe ensure there isn't any in your gradient you are trying to take over.
And that the gradient is CMYK. IIRC, RGB won’t work.
thank you Bob.
Ai has to be CMYK (ID can remain as RGB) and blam you paste it and a new gradient swatch is created.
thank you all - very much appreciated

Check the color space of your illustrator document. If the document color mode is RGB, you will get this sort of error. Change the document to CMYK, and it will transfer properly.
thank you SRiegel I think our posts crossed
