Wil Renczes Jan 13, 2012 12:20 PM (in response to BVX3001)This won't be much help, but if QT player can't open the file, then PPro certainly won't have much hope of doing any better.
I did find this thread, but it doesn't offer up anything obvious:

davidbeisner2010 Jan 13, 2012 12:46 PM (in response to BVX3001)You could have corrupted headers... Try opening the files with MPEG Streamclip and repackaging them with new headers...

SAFEHARBOR11 Jan 13, 2012 1:12 PM (in response to davidbeisner2010)Do the ProRes clips have 4-channel audio? I had the same error message with Atomos Ninja ProRes clips in CS5. The 4-channel audio is now supported in CS5.5, but I don't know that there is a fix for CS5 users. ProRes clips with 2-channel audio always worked just fine, and the ProRes codecs are automatically installed with QuickTime, so that is where they came from.

BVX3001 Jan 13, 2012 2:42 PM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Thanks for the suggestions guys.
No, they have just two channels of audio, and I tried the MPEG Streamclip route but it could not open them either.
I had to go to the dark side and use FCP 7 (which I don't know) on the wife's laptop and it was able to open the files. What a curiously odd piece of software that is after all these years on Premiere. I hoped to be able to use the HDMI out while the timeline played but that didn't work. But I was able to do the long renders to basic QuickTime that should work for now after a long day wasted.
I still have more hours of this footage to battle with in the near future, so please keep the thoughts & suggestions coming.

Eric Addison Jan 14, 2012 1:24 PM (in response to BVX3001)Do you have iTunes installed on the Windows machine? If not, try installing that and checking again.
I know, I know-it sounds crazy, but I ran into that same problem last year and found that some ProRes clips that wouldn't play on my workstation (w/out iTunes) would play on my laptop w/iTunes...installed iTunes on the workstation and bingo - everything worked.

Eric Addison Jan 14, 2012 2:01 PM (in response to lasvideo)The interesting thing this was I had the same version of QT installed on both machines - it was the addition of iTunes that seemed to allow the clips to play.
And people wonder why I don't use Macs...

lasvideo Jan 14, 2012 2:03 PM (in response to Eric Addison)You just have to know how to use them...just like PCs I would speculate it updated an older version of QT to the newer version that played better with Prores files.

bjarrett40 Mar 1, 2012 7:59 PM (in response to lasvideo)I am having this same problem. I get the same error message. I have the latest version of Quicktime Pro and iTunes on my PC and am running Win7 with CS5 Premiere Pro. I was a couple of months ago able to import movies but not now. I am thinking this must be some sort of file size restriction, or else it could be the fault of Win updates on my PC? Please help if anyone has a solution cause this is crazy for me. I had a ton of clips color graded in Color and now can't import them and use them - thanks - B

12. Re: ProRes 422 file problem (CS5/Win7)
bjarrett40 Mar 1, 2012 8:20 PM (in response to lasvideo)Thanks for the quick reply! "Unsupported format or damaged file." is error message in Premiere CS5. Same thing as the original post. I export out of FCP using File>Export>Quicktime and the ProRes422 23.98 HQ setting and make sure I have the check mark for keep move self-contained. This used to work. I even tried using Compressor to give me a new file, in case headers are bad and I it still won't import. I can't get the file to open in MPEG Streamclip, either. This file will play just fine in Quicktime on a Mac, however. My iTunes, Quicktime Pro and ProRes Decoder are all up to date. - thanks - B

14. Re: ProRes 422 file problem (CS5/Win7)
lasvideo Mar 1, 2012 8:32 PM (in response to lasvideo)You mentioned that you could play the 2 GB files but not the larger ones. I know here on the Mac I have the option of running Snow Leopard at 32 bits or 64. If I ran it at 32 there might be an inherent file size linitation imposed by the operating system. Its a wacky theroy but its all I got at the moment.
Do you bring those files into PrP 5 using the Media Directory? If not, try that.

lasvideo Mar 1, 2012 8:35 PM (in response to lasvideo)The more I think about your experience the more I think its a damaged file. You may need to try the export process again from FCP.

16. Re: ProRes 422 file problem (CS5/Win7)
bjarrett40 Mar 1, 2012 8:57 PM (in response to lasvideo)k - I will try these options, but I've been exporting out of FCP several times over the last 3 days and all this stuff won't export. The original post (not me) has had the experience of success with smaller files and not me at this point. I will try smaller file size tomorrow. The Mac I was using is using Snow Leopard and I think he might have mentioned that the owner of the Mac I used upgraded to it a while back - is it new? or has that been out for a while? Let me try Media Directory - which i have never used so i will have to figure out what that is....thanks - B

bjarrett40 Mar 1, 2012 9:04 PM (in response to bjarrett40)I does not work to import through the Media Browser. I am thinking this must me some 32 bit versus 64 bit issue? I am running 64 bit - thanks again -

bjarrett40 Mar 1, 2012 9:07 PM (in response to lasvideo)I would like for anyone to mess with the file, if they wanted, but it's like 14 gigs, so I guess I just have to break this up into smaller pieces, or get all the source render files from Color and export an XML out of FCP?

bjarrett40 Mar 2, 2012 1:16 PM (in response to Eric Addison)Ok - I have been able to import the file that was giving me trouble, but only when the file is on an external hardrive via USB and not on my media drive inside my PC - why would this be?

21. Re: ProRes 422 file problem (CS5/Win7)
bjarrett40 Mar 2, 2012 8:22 PM (in response to BVX3001)OK - I have found a sort of solution to this. I use MacDrive on my PC to read files that are on Mac formatted external hard drives. I had some color grading done in FCP and Color and exported them Quicktime ProRes422 HQ 23.98. The only way I can get those files to import into Premiere Pro on a PC is one of 2 solutions: 1) Make the clip very short or 2) Take the file that's on the external USB Mac-formatted hard drive, transfer the file to an external USB Windows NTFS formatted hard drive, and then transfer the file to my media drive on my PC. Don't understand why this works, but it does.

Hi Guys, I had been having a very similar problem yesterday with a 70GB Prores Mov, worked fine on a mac but not on a PC. After spending a day uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime and various codecs I eventualy tracked the problem down to Macdrive, it must be doing something odd to the file causes the problem.Anyway I fixed the problem by using a program called hfsexplorer, its free and when I used to to copy the file across to one of my local drives it worked perfectly.
The only downside is that the prgram can only read macdrives and only alows you to copy files, it doesnt mount drives so you wont be able to directly use footage from the drive.
Hope this helps
