I watched a tutorial on lens blur with depth map. It looks simple. Here's what I did:
create a text layer with text from to to bottom
create a solid layer with a ramp and make it not visible
apply lens blur to the text layer -- this immediately blurs all the text
change the depth map on the lens blur to the solid layer with a ramp - nothing interesting happens.
The text are equally blur (or not blur) from top to bottom.
I tried puttting the lens blur on an adjustment layer above the text layer with the same result.
What am I missing?

I'm using AE cs4 on windows 7 64 bit.
Put the solid with the ramp into a separate comp. Nest the comp in the main comp, and use it as the depth map.
You have to do that because AE processes things in a certain order.
Thanks. Applying precomp to the ramp layer works. But I found out I have to click the non default radio button in the precomp dialog. The one that says put all effects in the new comp or something like that.
Yes, you have to move all attributes to the new composition. You're changing the rendering order so that the Ramp gets rendered before Lens Blur depth map uses it.
