I'm not all that surprised that printing direct from ID to an HP printer is giving you trouble (though I never had any issues with mine, an LJ 1100, if I remember, but I never attempted to print legal). The normal advice when that happens is to export a PDF and print that from Acrobat. You say reader is crashing, so perhaps we should look at a crash report and see if we can figure out why. Please post the crash report on PasteBin.com and put a link to it here.
In the meantime, try setting the page size inthe print driver rather than the ID print dialog, and set the dialog to Defined by Driver.
Thanks Peter. I finally got to the point where I stopped using Adobe Reader all together, except for yesterday. I think it was when it hit ver 10 that we had problems. Mostly crashing, so if this is isolated maybe it's a corrupted plist file or something. I am printing wirelessly, the HP is set as a shared printer within our home network. Here's the first bit of the crash report. If you need more, let me know. Thanks for the tip on setting legal in the print dialogue box. Will try that.

Still getting the same result setting legal as the default in system prefs, print and fax for the HP printer. However, we have one mac connected via usb to the same printer. Tried printing the file directly from that computer with the same PDF and it prints legal fine.
Is there a known issue printing wirelessly to legal paper? We have no problem printing wirelessly to letter sized. I'm also wondering also if Reader just doesn't like wireless printing.
I'm barely able to interpret a few ID crashes, so we'll need to wait for John and see if he has any ideas.
As far as wireless, I don't know about that, either. All my printers are wired, and I'm a Windows user, to boot. I did mean, though, that you should set the page size in the driver by clicking the setup button in the print dialog, not by changing the defaults.
Thanks Peter. I have really apprecaited the support I have recieved on these forums. We just switched to Production Premium from Final Cut Studio and honestly, in all my years this has been the best user forum experience I've ever had. (we have used Photoshop, InDesign for years)
You may be aware, but in the Mac OS, for the most part, drivers are built in. When you update the OS you update drivers. I can't access that level that I am aware of like you can on the PC. Through system prefs I can access the dialogue box for print functions and even go down to the point of seeing the driver version number, but there are no settings at this level. Anyway, for now I have a workaround, but it would be nice to figure out the issue of legal not printing wirelessly through print sharing.
Thanks ahead of time for checking with John.
Even on Mac there is a setup button inthe ID print dialog that takes you to printer driver features for the selected printer. I coan't show you a screen cap, unfortunately, or I would....
That, for example, is generally where you need to set borderless page sizes for printers that support that function, and overrides the defaults you might have set.
OK, gotcha. Sorry I missed that. If I go to the ID print dialogue - "file" "print" and select "printer" at the bottom of the dialogue I get this warning: "If the desired print setting is available in InDesign's Print dialog box, please set it there to avoid printing conflicts." Then I hit "OK" anyway.
It takes me to various print functions for the printer I chose, in this case the wireless HP printer. There is a greyed out option that says, "Destination Paper Size:" and it's already set to "Suggested Paper: US Legal". That still does the funky printing though with our wireless setup.
Also in the main ID print dialogue box under "output" and "setup" it shows the paper size as portrait and US Legal.
Try setting that to defined by driver...
Never noticed that. How would that be different than just selecting legal and making sure my default setting in system prefs is set to legal?
Because you are ceding the page setup to the driver (remember the warning?). This often solves printer weirdness. No guarantee here, but it's worth trying.
I'm barely able to interpret a few ID crashes, so we'll need to wait for John and see if he has any ideas.
Sorry, John's been busy elsewhere...The crash seems to happen when Adobe asks OSX to create the name of the paper size: OpaquePMPaper::CreateLocalizedPaperName(OpaquePMPrinter*) + 355. This probably means it is a printer driver problem... If defined by driver works, great. Otherwise make sure you're using the latest drivers for your printer, or try backing out a version...
Thanks guys, appreciate the tips. Just googled on Apples site and it looks like they had new HP drivers posted the end of last year. Will load them and see.
