InDesign CS5.5: Change size of text in a text variable

How do you change the size of the text that is defined in a text variable when this text shows up on my pages? I know it all has to be the same format, that's fine, I want it all the same size only smaller.

variables are a single character, as far as ID is concerned, so you can select the whole ting and format any way you like.
