Jacob Bugge Jan 29, 2012 8:52 AM (in response to simpson246)Simpson,
Hi all, I'm looking to make an exact replica of my number plate
That may be difficult without the font.
The width of each letter needs to be : 50mm
All letters the same width?
How would I go about setting this up please?
Which part(s) of the process from creating the individual letters to the final plate replica?

simpson246 Jan 29, 2012 9:30 AM (in response to simpson246)Thanks for the reply.
Heres where I got the font from : http://www.dafont.com/uk-number-plate.font
All letters are the same width apart from 'I' and '1'
I need to set the same the width of the letters to that stated too.
Thanks,

MW Design Jan 29, 2012 10:02 AM (in response to simpson246)You could set up a grid or guidlines. I found it pretty quick to simply make a couple boxes. One of the size of a letter (50 mm x 79 mm and find the point size it took to dimension the font you are using (327.5 pt I believe). Make another box for the letter spacing.
Typed a ficticious plate number (hey, I'm in the US) of a 6 alphanumeric pattern. Took my plate number, typed and sized a character, placed it, moved my spacer box, dup'ed the first character, changed it, moved the spacer and so on.
Take care, Mike

Jacob Bugge Jan 29, 2012 12:58 PM (in response to simpson246)Simpson,
You may:
1) Type the number plate contents,
2) Type>Create Outlines,
3) Scale to fit the desired size(s) (you may use desired size*100/present size, presumable the proportions should be right, but you may scale differently for W and H (horizontal and vertical),
4) Align>Distribute, inserting the different values as needed, from left to right (select the ones in question, and click the leftmost to make it the key object).

simpson246 Jan 31, 2012 3:16 AM (in response to simpson246)Thanks for the replies. That all looks a bit confusing.
To make things simple, is there an easy way to have my each letter of my text 79mm wide by 50mm wide.
The spacing doesn't matter but I just need the font to be exactly the above. Thanks,

8. Re: Hi all, need some help setting up lettering sizing and spacing.
Jacob Bugge Jan 31, 2012 4:07 AM (in response to simpson246)Simpson,
As long as you have Live Type (editable text created with the Type Tool, or one of them), the size shown in the Transform palette/panel corresponds to its being types, includes the full Em height and more.
If you Type>Create Outlines (Step 2) in post #5), you break up the Type into a Group of (Compound) Paths, each forming an individual letter. If you DirectSelect a letter, or if you Ungroup and Select one letter, you can see its size as the W and H in the Transform palette/panel.
That is the basis for the suggestions in post #5. No need to sacrifice the spacing.

simpson246 Jan 31, 2012 4:14 AM (in response to simpson246)Hi, thanks for the reply.
I've had a go and completely failed.
So I'm gonna start again,
Starting from fresh, where is this 'live type' please?
thanks,

Jacob Bugge Jan 31, 2012 5:31 AM (in response to simpson246)Simpson,
I presume you start by writing the contents of the number plate with the Type Tool. If you keep it selected and click the dropdown menu Type at the top of the screen (File, Edit, Object, Type), the option Create Outlines appears in the list.
