Newbie ? > make background disappear

Please forgive my not knowing the proper jargon - total newbie I am.

I have a simple graphic of an animal (clip-art-ish kind of thing). The background is white so unless I paste the thing onto white paper I get a white background on top of the overall background color. I suspect the Magic Wand Tool is what I want but beyond that I'm unsure what to do. Presently my Help menu is MIA. Image is a .GIF file.

      Thank you for any consideration,

Here are a couple of methods to try

In Fireworks, your bitmap graphic sits on top of the canvas. The first thing you want to do is make the canvas transparent. Go to
Modify > Canvas > Canvas Color...
            and select Transparent

Now you can start selecting pixels of your image's background with the Magic Wand tool and then deleting them (just press the Del key). When you do, you should see a grey and white checkerboard pattern start to come show. This is your transparent canvas. Everywhere you see this, your image is transparent. (If it's difficult to see, you can always set your canvas to some contrasting color, like hot pink, temporarily. Modify > Canvas > Canvas Color..., select the color square under Custom and pick something...different. Make sure you change back to transparent for the next step, though.)

When you save the image, you save a Fireworks .png file, which contains some proprietary information. To use the image on a Web page, you want to export. Go to
            File > Image Preview
To export a transparent .gif, select .GIF from the Format drop-down box. Below the colors, select "Alpha Transparency" and then you can export.
