I just upgraded from ID4 to IN5.5. I noticed ID5.5 installed everything into a new directory. ID5.5 appears to be working correctly. ID4 still appears to be fully functional too. I do not want two versions of ID on the computer.
Can I now uninstall ID4 and leave ID5.5 in place and will ID5.5 remain fully functional?
Uninstalling an older version after a newer one can cause some problems, which are easily rectified by reinstalling the new version if necessary, but there are some other good reasons NOT to remove CS4. If you need to do minor edits on legacy files, or collaborate with someone else using CS4 it's much better to saty in that version. There are also some reports of CS3 and CS4 files that develop problems after opening and editing in CS5/5.5, and the best insurance for avoiding that appears to be export to .inx or .idml from CS4 and converting that inthe new version.
To give a concrete example of what Peter is suggesting, if you are bitten by the Page numbering wrong when exporting to pdf bug (which occasionally affects ID files combined in a "Book" in IDCS5.5) you might appreciate having IDCS4 available.
