    Document crashed in InDesign 5.5- it will not open

    tayjuncker

      I have a doc that just crashed my ID5.5. It will not open, ID "does not respond" and I have to force quit. I cleaned out the preferences, I tried opening the file on another computer. Nothing works.

      I posted the crash report. Can anyone help?

          Well, it looks like InDesign is just hanging, not crashing, right?

          PID:             284

          Event:           hang

          Duration:        5.64s (sampling started after 2 seconds)

          Steps:           16 (100ms sampling interval)

          Anyhow, it's not really all too clear to me what the cause is. I don't think I've seen this one before:

          16 GetPlugIn + 39847 (in Font Manager) [0x210caa07]

          16 StoryEndCharHelper::FixEndCharacterSingleStory(UIDRef const&) + 212 (in PublicLib.dylib) [0x1407754]

          16 StoryEndCharHelper::FixEndCharacterSingleThread(ITextModel*, long, long) + 272 (in PublicLib.dylib) [0x1407510]

          16 StoryEndCharHelper::CopyAttributesDirect(ITextModel*, long, long) + 614 (in PublicLib.dylib) [0x1406b46]

          16 GetPlugIn + 2335869 (in Text) [0x24decf7d]

          It suggests there is something font related, but also something wrong with, err, the last character of your story.

          So, I would try removing all your non-system fonts and seeing if that works. If you email me your document I can take a look tonight, but I don't think your chances are good.

          You can also try the Markzware file recovery service, though if your job is due tomorrow I've no idea what their turnaround time is.

            Yes- it just hangs in "not responding" mode.

            I deactivated all my non-system fonts but it still wouldn't open.

            I'd be happy to email you the doc just on the off chance you could open it.

            I am assuming it's the last font or last piece of art I was working with, but of course I can't open it to get rid of it. How can I email it to you?

              If you click on my icon to the left you should see my email under Brief Bio.

                Received. Yeah, it doesn't want to open for me either. In the InDesign Debug build, it reports some stuff that encourages the idea that the document is just corrupt:

                VOS_StyleReference::ReadWrite - fLength > 0

                Inconsist vos disk page length and vos obj lengths.

                VOSDiskPage::TotalLength() - fTotalLength is incorrect!

                Somewhat surprisingly, I was able to convince it to keep trying... curiously, I'd bever thought to try exactly  this approach, which was to fire up gdb and force stack frames to "return." (Gosh, I hope that's not a EULA violation).

                I sent you a re-saved version of the file.

                I would suggest in the future you should keep much better backups...Hope this was helpful.

                  THANK YOU. It saved virtually everything. I don't understand exactly what you did or what happened, but yes, I will back up.
